Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state-of-the-art facilities across 4 sites (Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull hospitals).
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist with experience in all aspects of POCT, who must be HCPC registered, have completed a specialist portfolio. We will also consider candidates as learning contract who have commenced specialist portfolio training. This vacancy is to work 30 hrs/week and is based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. There will be a requirement to work across all sites.
POCT is part of the Clinical Laboratory Services providing a patient-focused quality service. The POCT department provides a dynamic service that actively promotes innovation and service development.
You will be part of a busy POCT, made up of a specialist and experienced team, all working towards a common goal. Our POCT department has a wide range of equipment spread across multiple sites including blood gas analysers, Glucose/Ketone meters, Urine pregnancy and Urinalysis readers, INR, D-Dimer, HbA1c, Hb, TEG, ROTEM, COVID/Flu testing.
The successful candidate will be expected to work autonomously to deliver high quality of service; communicate with clinical, managerial staff within the Trust and across external organizations and suppliers.

Main Duties of the Job
The candidate will be expected to have an excellent understanding of all areas within POCT, experience in using different POCT instruments with the evidence of maintaining skills and competency. We are looking for people who work well in a team and are excellent communicators.

POCT department delivers a dynamic service that actively promotes innovation and development, working towards UKAS accreditation.
The post holder will be responsible for performing tasks to meet the needs of the POCT service in different clinical areas. This could include a range of technical, scientific, professional, and clinical duties to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, ensuring that the needs of the department are met to deliver a quality clinical service including but not limited to:
1. Undertake maintenance on a wide range of POCT instruments.
2. Train all grades of staff within POCT and Clinical area.
3. Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, quality assurance procedures in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards.
4. Technically validate, interpret and report results within the agreed turnaround times.
5. Help with out-of-hours service on a rotational basis including weekends, bank holidays.
6. Participate in breath test clinics.
