Overview
A well-established infrastructure consultancy is seeking a Specialist In-Situ Testing Technician to support a variety of ground investigation projects across the UK. This is a field-based role suited to someone with a practical mindset, strong attention to detail, and the ability to operate technical equipment in demanding site environments.
You’ll be involved in advanced geotechnical testing methods including CPT, pressuremeter testing, and permeability testing, working closely with engineers and contractors to collect accurate ground data for major infrastructure schemes.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and maintain in-situ testing equipment including:
CPT (Cone Penetration Testing – piezocone, seismic, etc.)
Pressuremeter testing (SBP, HPD, CPM)
Permeability tests (falling/rising head)
Carry out and monitor installation of instruments such as:
Piezometers, inclinometers, extensometers, strain gauges
Supervise borehole operations and drilling crews when required
Assist with site setup, logging, and data recording
Collect, review, and transmit site data in accordance with UKAS standards
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of testing equipment
Adhere to H&S procedures and promote safe working practices
Support reporting engineers by ensuring accurate and reliable test data
Requirements
Full UK driving licence
Experience working in a physical, outdoor, or construction-based role
Good mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with basic geotechnical principles (desirable but not essential)
High level of attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection
Willingness to travel and work on sites across the UK, sometimes staying away
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Competence in using basic computer systems for data entry and logging
CSCS card or willingness to obtain
Health & Safety awareness and ability to follow safe systems of work
Desirable
Prior experience with CPT or other in-situ testing
NVQ or HND in Construction, Engineering, Geology, or similar field
Familiarity with UKAS standards and quality procedures
