Environmental Sustainability Manager

Key Responsibilities

* Promote a positive environmental culture through proactive engagement and communication with project teams, supply chain, clients and statutory bodies.
* Maintain and update environmental plans and procedures, including the EMP, and approve relevant documents (CEMP, method statements) in consultation with the National Highways Project Manager and statutory bodies.
* Appoint, train and monitor the performance of Environmental Advisors/Assistants, Ecological Clerks of Works, Environmental Management Representatives (EMRs) and Sustainability Coordinators.
* Act as the point of contact between regulatory authorities (Environment Agency, Natural England, Heritage England, Local Authorities) and third‑party consultees on site‑based issues.
* Coordinate and undertake regular site inspections with construction teams to monitor compliance with environmental licences, consents, plans and procedures, implementing corrective actions to ensure compliance with UK regulations.
* Investigate environmental incidents and near‑miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned.
* Keep records of all site activities, environmental problems, transgressions and schedules of tasks undertaken; provide professional advice to contractors, consultants and project team members on environmental and ecological issues.
* Undertake risk assessment and work package plan reviews to ensure that documents are suitable and sufficient, complying with company minimum requirements for direct and subcontract works.


Qualifications

* Environmental Degree or related discipline (preferred) or NEBOSH Environmental Diploma or IEMA Certificate.
* Chartered Environmentalist (preferred).
* Relevant CSCS Card.
* Full clean driving licence.
* Strong understanding of environmental management in a construction environment.
* Experience with investigation (root‑cause analysis) techniques for incident investigation.
* Ownership and accountability for tasks, delivering to successful completion.
* Understanding and knowledge of confidentiality requirements of the role.
* Experience managing administrative staff within an Environmental Sustainability department.
* Experience chairing meetings with workforce and supply chain.
* Strong and effective communication skills to deliver key safety messages.


Engineering Control

* Strong understanding and experience of the construction and civil engineering process, including constraints and requirements of specialist heavy‑civil operations (piling, earthworks, lifting, pavement, drainage, etc.).


Commercial

* Understanding of how budgets are produced and how costs are defined for environmental issues.


Desirable Qualities & Experience

* Ability to seek out and deliver innovative training methods and instruction, adapting communication styles for workforce and staff alike.
