Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Praised at our latest HTA inspection for high standard of working practices and positive staff culture, UHS mortuary is modern, well‑equipped and highly secure, with dedicated adult, paediatric and high‑risk post‑mortem facilities.
Responsibilities
* Carry out day‑to‑day mortuary and post‑mortem administrative work in consultation with the APT staff, including assisting with the care of all patients, liaising with external and internal service users, developing working relationships, working with families and ensuring HTA standards are followed.
* Work in a varied, complex environment that requires a high degree of organisation and proficiency in all aspects of mortuary work.
* Maintain a flexible approach to daily tasks, demonstrate initiative, liaise with others and follow departmental SOPs.
UHS mortuary department continuously seeks opportunities to develop services and encourages staff involvement in improvement projects. The role involves collaborating with other teams and staff groups within the Trust.

Person Specification
Essential criteria
* Experience working in a busy administrative environment
* Experience in a customer‑facing role
* ECDL or equivalent
* NVQ3 in Administration or working towards it
* Able to present information to others
* Use judgement and initiative to provide information and support
* Apply tact and sensitivity to establish trust and confidence
* Empathetic approach to dealing with and resolving enquiries
* Previous administrative experience in a similar setting
* Compose correspondence and reports
* Handle seeing and hearing sensitive & distressing information within a bereavement setting
* Read and understood basics of Caldicott principles and GDPR
* Use empathy and emotional intelligence when dealing with difficult situations
* Communicate clearly and sensitively with a wide range of patients, including those with language difficulties or anxious or distressed families
* Understand confidentiality and protect confidential information
Desirable criteria
* NHS or public sector experience
* Working with funeral directors or coroner’s service
* Knowledge & experience in using patient management systems
* Knowledge of medical terminology
* Good understanding of the coronial system
* Good working knowledge of mortuary practices
