An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for a dedicated individual with Head Gardener & Project Manager (and garden design) experience, to take on a prestigious 3.5-acre private estate located next to Richmond Park, London. This role is ideal for a self-motivated and passionate horticulturalist eager to work in a stunning environment, contributing to the care and re-development of the gardens alongside a small team.
This role will oversee the implementation of extensive landscaping plans by a renowned garden designer to redevelop the gardens over the next 24 months. The person appointed will be responsible for the successful delivery of the project to set deadlines and budgets. They will also be expected to prepare quotes as well implement and manage both health and safety, and quality procedures. You will be expected to liaise with clients and their representatives as well as sub-contractors, designers and other external contractors. Your role will also include the resourcing of both sub-contractors and materials, identifying and pricing variations/additional work.
The estate features maintained lawns, protected trees, vegetable patches, and a greenhouse, all waiting for an experienced hand to oversee the redevelopment of the gardens from initial concept to completion. This offers an exciting opportunity for the new Head Gardener to leave a lasting mark. This role involves working closely with the property manager to understand and execute the owners’ vision, translating their ideas into a vibrant and thriving landscape. The position is ideal for someone who is proactive, self-driven, and thrives on turning creative ideas into reality.
The garden’s location within a protected site adds an additional layer of responsibility, making knowledge of tree preservation and care vital. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of garden management, development, and seasonal care, ensuring that the grounds are maintained to the highest standards throughout the year. This includes working with the team to preserve the natural beauty of the gardens while implementing the landscaping project to enhance the estate’s overall aesthetic.
The ideal candidate will bring at least 5 years of horticultural experience, ideally gained on private estates or within public gardens. Comprehensive plant knowledge, including expertise in woodland management, is essential, as are the relevant horticultural qualifications. In addition to technical skills, the Head Gardener will be expected to demonstrate strong communication abilities and a friendly, approachable nature, working both independently and as part of a team. A positive attitude, leadership qualities, and a love for horticulture are key to succeeding in this role.
SALARY: £50,000 DOE Live out
