Job Description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors as they’re responsible for 24% of UK Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. They’ll need to fully decarbonise by 2050 whilst doubling electricity production. Concerns about energy security provide additional pressures to quickly transition to new sustainable sources of power, whilst maximising domestic sources of energy.

Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, as well as mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

We’re recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for somebody with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including various scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance and training.
* Develop strategy for the sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents – be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

Team

The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation, Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools in support of regulation of the energy sectors, guidance and training to deliver new duties, and environmental best practice.

Experience and Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role in question, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes; knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

Application Information

Applications will be ‘blind’ assessed using your answers to the competency questions. Feedback is generally not available at the application stage.

For questions relating to this role, please contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk.

This vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham, by the end of November. The role will require some travel.

EEO Statement and Additional Policies

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, and we have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.

We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability who are seeking employment. We have committed to guaranteeing an interview to anyone with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.
