Medical Secretary – Neurology Department
Location: South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary within our Neurology Department. The role supports the clinical team, ensuring a first‑class service is delivered to patients, consultants and external agencies.
Main duties
* Typing correspondence, managing patient appointments and dealing with phone queries.
* Managing clinical diaries, rotas and waiting‑list validation.
* Performing other secretarial and administrative duties that contribute to the efficient running of the Neurology service.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain an effective secretarial service for a team of consultants and other clinical staff. Act as a pivotal role for communication with patients and professional health colleagues within the multi‑disciplinary team, internal departments and external agencies, ensuring continuity of patient care. To comply with the Trust's vision, values and behavioural compact.
Person Specification
Experience
* Working in a customer‑focused/service environment.
* Previous NHS experience.
* Previous medical secretarial experience.
Physical & Mental Ability
* Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
* Capable of working independently or as part of a team.
* Able to deal effectively with patient enquiries.
* Uses initiative to problem‑solve.
* Committed to delivering quality patient care.
* Motivated and enthusiastic.
* Target and results driven.
Qualifications
* AMSPAR Diploma level 3, OCR/RSA level 3 or equivalent typing/keyboard qualification, or 2 years experience in a similar secretarial/administrative role.
* Educated to GCSE Level 2 (Numeracy and Literacy) (Grades A to C) standard or equivalent.
Skills & Knowledge
* Proven interpersonal/communication skills.
* Effective organisational skills.
* Knowledge of hospital information systems.
* Knowledge of Trust secretarial standards.
* Knowledge of NHS waiting‑time targets.
