Job Description:
Job Purpose
Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. We are creating a cleaner, greener system that protects the planet and serves future generations.
We are establishing an energy team in Southeast or Economic Heartland. The Technical Lead will be based in this region, initially home-based with hybrid working options.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) will develop Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs) for 11 regions across Great Britain, reflecting regional characteristics and integrating various energy vectors such as renewables, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, and energy networks.
This role involves working with local organizations, including government and energy networks, to develop infrastructure insights and attract investments. Stakeholder engagement is key.
You will be the technical engagement lead, applying your energy planning expertise to coordinate with central and regional teams, validate local energy insights, and contribute to methodology and stakeholder communication.
Understanding the Southeast and/or Economic Heartland regions is essential. Please indicate your preferred region(s) and rationale when applying.
Our immediate focus is to build trust with stakeholders, establish processes, and develop our capabilities in whole energy systems to support net zero goals.
About us
As Great Britain’s electricity system operator, we balance supply and demand, ensuring reliable electricity delivery. In 2024, we will transition to the National Energy System Operator (NESO), overseeing electricity and gas network planning and operation with independence from government and regulators.
Our mission is to shape energy use and consumption for generations to come.
Key Accountabilities
* Own and understand regional energy system planning inputs and interfaces.
* Develop, consult, and implement parts of the RESP methodology.
* Validate regional geospatial energy data in coordination with the central team.
* Coordinate within the regional team and with other RESP teams.
* Represent NESO’s regional planning to local energy stakeholders.
* Engage stakeholders, communicate assumptions, and propose changes as needed.
* Assist in developing geospatial visualizations and communicate insights.
* Innovate in analysis and problem-solving methods.
About you
We seek individuals with:
* Technical experience and knowledge of the energy sector and scenarios.
* Understanding of the whole energy system, including specific vectors like gas, electricity, heat, hydrogen, and transport.
* Experience with energy distribution/transmission companies.
* Geospatial data modeling skills, ideally in energy planning.
* Ability to simplify complex technical information for non-technical audiences.
* Stakeholder communication and influencing skills.
* Project management and coordination skills.
* Curiosity and willingness to learn and train others.
What you'll get
Salary: £46,000 - £54,000, plus bonus, 26 days leave, and a contributory pension scheme with company matching up to 12%.
Additional benefits include career development support, an inclusive community, and comprehensive rewards covering health, finance, work/life balance, and career growth.
