We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team at Merville Barracks, Circular Road South, Colchester, CO2 7UT, leading the daily supervision and delivery of electrical maintenance services across a diverse and challenging estate. You’ll be responsible for ensuring all planned and reactive maintenance, remedial works, and statutory compliance tasks are completed to the highest standards, while mentoring and supporting your team in line with our company policies, H&S regulations, and service level agreements. This is a key role requiring technical expertise, leadership, and the ability to manage internal teams and external contractors effectively. You’ll also play an integral part in developing apprentices, maintaining safety and compliance, and supporting operational and project initiatives. What you’ll do: Team Leadership & Supervision Lead and supervise the electrical team, including apprentices and multi-skilled tradesmen, ensuring high standards of performance and compliance. Hold regular one-to-one meetings, deliver team briefs and toolbox talks, and support personal development reviews (PDRs). Monitor and mentor team members to ensure technical progression, safe working practices, and professional growth. Maintenance Delivery & Compliance Oversee the delivery of all self-delivered and subcontracted planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive and corrective tasks in line with contract SLA and statutory requirements. Ensure that all electrical testing and inspections (C1–C3s) are completed and documented accurately. Carry out inspections of completed works to ensure quality and compliance. Track and record all activities via the “Track Record” system or equivalent. Health & Safety & Risk Management Ensure full adherence to health and safety regulations, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), and company policies. Conduct regular audits on internal and contractor activities to ensure safety standards are met. Take immediate and appropriate action to mitigate risks arising from the non-completion of statutory or safety-critical tasks. Operational Support Provide operational support across all areas of the contract, including input into lifecycle planning and business case development. Investigate and respond to audit findings (internal and external) and support the Service Delivery Manager in technical and operational queries. Manage van fleet requirements, tools, equipment, and stock for the electrical team. Project & Contractor Management Coordinate and control access for third-party contractors and ensure all works are compliant and aligned with CDM regulations. Arrange and review contractor quotations and manage the on-site delivery of contracted work. Enforce contractor control procedures and monitor performance. Technical Oversight & Development Undertake or supervise tasks as an Authorised Person (HV, LV, generators, hazardous areas) or work towards this qualification. Provide technical advice and escalation support for complex maintenance issues. Write and review technical documentation in support of lifecycle projects and barrack damage claims. Materials & Procurement Support procurement activities through SAP in line with delegated authority limits (DOA). Ensure materials and services are sourced appropriately and are available to support timely task completion. Stakeholder & Helpdesk Liaison Liaise with the Helpdesk team to ensure timely job assignment, escalation of capped jobs, and seamless workflow management. Act as a key point of contact for the client and ensure professional communication at all levels. Coordinate building access and approvals with nominated client representatives. Continuous Improvement Promote a culture of continuous improvement, driving service efficiency, innovation, and technical excellence. Identify and implement process improvements to optimize performance and compliance. Commit to ongoing personal training and development aligned to role and business needs. What you bring: NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent. City & Guilds 2391 (or equivalent testing and inspection qualification). Good knowledge of BS 7671:2018 and HASAWA 1974. Authorised Person training (HV, LV, Stand-By Generators, Hazardous Areas) or willingness to achieve. Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical maintenance within facilities or defence engineering environments. Previous line management experience of technical multi-skilled teams. Strong awareness of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and CDM Regulations. Demonstrated ability to assess risks and make sound decisions independently. Effective communicator with ability to manage multiple stakeholders. Familiarity with SAP and asset management systems is desirable.
