Job post summary Date posted: 3 March 2026 Pay: £16.00 per hour Job Description: Bhuku Ltd is looking to deliver a specialist literacy programme at HMP & YOI Doncaster. We are now seeking a committed and skilled Literacy Tutor to join our delivery team and play a vital role in supporting learners with very low literacy levels. This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about second-chance learning, trauma-informed practice, and making a measurable impact in a custodial environment. The role will be subject to security clearance. While not essential for application, a current clearance would be advantageous. ⸻ Key Responsibilities Deliver engaging literacy sessions to learners with minimal or no reading ability, including those with mild learning difficulties or neurodiverse needs Facilitate classroom-based, on-wing, and 1:1 literacy support Deliver phonics-based teaching and early reading interventions Train, support, and supervise peer mentors who provide 1:1 learner support Adapt teaching to suit regime changes and learner availability Complete registers, learner progress records, and at-risk reports Provide timely feedback and ensure assessments are completed within required timeframes Collaborate closely with prison staff, education managers, and Bhuku’s quality team Uphold safeguarding, security, and professional boundaries at all times ⸻ Delivery Hours Teaching takes place within the following core session times: 08:30 – 11:30 13:45 – 16:30 Monday to Friday. Timetables will be agreed with the establishment. Working hours are 0800 - 1700. ⸻ Essential Requirements Experience teaching English / literacy to learners with low prior attainment Phonics training or strong phonics delivery experience Ability to work calmly and professionally in a prison environment Strong behaviour management and trauma-informed practice Excellent communication and record-keeping skills Willingness and ability to undergo HMPPS security vetting (mandatory) ⸻ Desirable Experience Experience working in custodial, alternative, or secure education settings Experience supporting learners with SEND, LDD, or neurodiversity Familiarity with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework Experience training or supervising peer mentors or learning champions A recognised teaching, education, or literacy qualification ⸻ What We Offer £16 per hour, paid monthly Full induction and ongoing support A meaningful role supporting rehabilitation and progression A supportive delivery and quality assurance structure The opportunity to be part of a growing specialist prison education provider Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract Contract length: 7 months Work Location: In person Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract Contract length: 7 months Work Location: In person
