Offer description

Overview

Start Strong. Learn Deeply. Thrive in Newcastle. Newcastle City Council’s Children’s Social Care is building a service rooted in relationships and restorative practice with a focus on early intervention and impact. We’re on a journey to become a UNICEF Child Friendly City and a Marmot City, placing children at the centre of everything we do. This is an exciting time to join the Families First partnership and contribute to delivering earlier, more effective support for children and families. Newcastle City Council is investing in Children’s Social Care and offering new opportunities within our teams.

If you’re a newly qualified or early-career Social Worker looking to build confidence, develop skills, and make a real difference—this is your moment.

The Role

We’re recruiting to our Long-Term Social Work Service, supporting children and families through:

* Long-term Child in Need support
* Child Protection Plans
* Care Proceedings

As a Social Worker, you’ll work as part of a supportive team, managing a caseload appropriate to your level of experience. You’ll receive regular supervision, reflective practice opportunities, and access to a structured development pathway to help you grow into a confident, capable practitioner.

Why Newcastle

Newcastle is a vibrant, multicultural city where creativity, kindness, and resilience run deep. It is a place that welcomes your ideas and offers a supportive community for social workers.

We’re proud to be

* A UNICEF Child Friendly City in progress
* A City of Sanctuary – a welcome place for those seeking refuge
* A city where social workers are valued, supported, and heard

“Children benefit from committed social workers who know them well and recognise the importance of children needing a trusted adult in their lives.” — Ofsted, 2025

“The relational practice model is in evidence across the help and protection service… enabling social workers to undertake more complex direct work and interventions with children.” — Ofsted, 2025

“Practitioners… report feeling highly valued and well supported.” — Ofsted, 2025

What We Offer

* A dedicated 5-day induction
* Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme
* Generous annual leave + bank holidays (with the option to buy more)
* Flexible and hybrid working options
* A generous flexi-time scheme
* Employee Assistance Programme
* Defined benefit pension scheme
