Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
📍 Automotive & Advanced Vehicle Engineering | Competitive Salary
We are looking for a Design Engineer who wants to do far more than create CAD models.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of the mechanical design framework behind an innovative electric and future hybrid vehicle platform. Youll play a pivotal role in developing a new vehicle architecture, integrating supplier systems, and helping establish the engineering processes and design standards that will support future growth. The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical design capability with systems-thinking, practical engineering judgement, and a desire to improve the way products are developed.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the mechanical design and development of vehicle structures and platform architectures.
* Modify and adapt the platform for multiple customer and application requirements.
* Drive system integration activities including packaging, routing, mounting strategies, and design optimisation.
* Integrate driveline and subsystem components supplied by external partners into the vehicle architecture.
* Develop robust CAD methodologies, standards, and best practices.
* Improve design governance, including part numbering, revision control, drawing release processes, and engineering documentation.
* Produce manufacturing-ready designs and drawings in accordance with BS 8888 standards.
* Apply GD&T principles to ensure manufacturability and product quality.
* Work closely with manufacturing and suppliers to support Design for Manufacture (DFM) initiatives.
* Support development of composite structures, weldments, mould tooling, and associated production methods.
What Were Looking For
* Proven experience in mechanical design engineering within automotive, mobility, aerospace, marine, or complex engineered products.
* Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD packages.
* Experience designing fabricated structures, weldments, and/or composite assemblies.
* Strong understanding of GD&T and BS 8888 drawing standards.
* Knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM), particularly for composites and welded structures.
* Experience integrating supplier-provided systems and components into larger assemblies.
* Understanding of engineering change control, configuration management, and product lifecycle processes.
* Comfortable working across concept development, detailed design, prototype build, and production support.
* Ability to identify process improvements and drive engineering maturity within a growing organisation.
Desirable Experience:
* Experience implementing or managing CAD systems and engineering data processes.
* Exposure to Onshape or other cloud-based CAD/PDM platform.
* Experience within EV, hybrid, or low-volume vehicle development programmes.
* Familiarity with vehicle packaging, chassis development, and systems integration.
Why Join Us?
* Opportunity to influence the next generation of EV and hybrid vehicle platforms.
* Genuine ownership of both product development and engineering processes.
* Varied role spanning design, integration, manufacturing, and systems engineering.
* Chance to shape the future CAD and design environment of the business.
* Work within a highly collaborative team developing innovative mobility solutions.
