Responsibilities
* Perform all core scientific and interpretive work for the Cervical Screening, in line with the training and qualifications of a Registered Cytology Consultant Biomedical Scientist.
* Work effectively as a member of the Pathology team to provide a professional clinical laboratory service.
* Attend Colposcopy MDTs to provide recommendations on patient management and correct follow‑up.
* Authorise cervical smears at all levels, including cases requiring clinical intervention, and participate in the management of the screening programme.
* Support the Discipline Lead, Clinical Lead and Lead Consultant BMS' in cervical cytology to ensure the effective delivery of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme with reference to the agreed standards.
* Work in partnership with AP's and other laboratory staff, giving advice and support as required; apply expert specialist knowledge, experience, skills and autonomy for reporting of cervical smears (manipulating material under a microscope) which will include signing out smears that are assessed as negative, inadequate, or abnormal, giving the appropriate management recommendation.
* Review smears from relevant cases for teaching, audit, internal quality control and clinical governance purposes.
* Provide the cervical cytology element of Colposcopy multi‑disciplinary team meetings to ensure a high quality clinical service; this includes review/interpreation of complex cases and recommendations for patient management/follow‑up.
* Make recommendations on appropriate clinical investigations and subsequent follow‑up for women with abnormal or positive cervical smears. Judgements need to be made on highly complex cases, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options for diagnosis and management.
* Review discrepancies in reporting where identified and take appropriate action to resolve the screening issue.
* Support the lead CBMS' and CSPL in developing and implementing an audit programme for Cervical Screening, especially in the audit of cervical cancers, and ensure that the appropriate audit cycles are complete and actions are taken in keeping with the National Standards.
* Support the Discipline Lead and Lead CBMS' in the long‑term planning and strategy for the service.
