Overview
Fertility Nurse - 16 Month Fixed Term Contract. The post holder will be one of a group of specialist nurses working within the fertility clinic. The clinic provides treatments including IVF/ICSI, Ovulation Induction, Egg donation and Sharing, Egg Recipiency, and Surgical Sperm Retrieval. The role is full time (37.5 hours per week) and weekends on rotation; the position is a 16 month fixed term contract located at Oxford Fertility.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop a satisfactory level of clinical competence in ART skills, plan and co-ordinate treatment cycles, and undertake specific investigations such as endocrine profiles.
* Assist in the management and support of sub-fertile couples before, during and after treatment cycles, developing a therapeutic environment to meet individual needs.
* Undertake patient consultations before, during and post treatment cycles.
* Ensure informed consent is given and complete the appropriate unit and HFEA consent forms, discussing risks associated with ART and potential usage of gametes for research.
* Demonstrate excellent communication skills, providing information and implications counselling to enable couples to make informed choices regarding their treatment.
* Support patients and families in highly stressful situations (e.g. breaking bad news, diagnosis of ectopic or miscarriage, bereavement, anger management) face to face and by telephone.
* Explain risks of iatrogenic disease such as ovarian hyper-stimulation, multiple pregnancy, and ethical issues around research on gametes/embryos.
* Explain and complete consent forms for storage of frozen gametes and posthumous use where applicable; discuss disposal of property in case of separation or divorce.
* Keep accurate records for each patient, contribute to written information, and ensure records meet NMC/HFEA requirements.
* Assist with data collation from procedures, transfer to patient notes, and ensure compliance with HFEA regulations.
* In conjunction with senior nursing staff, coordinate booking of treatment cycles, plan drug prescribing, and liaise with GPs.
* Explain individualised treatment schedules, potential drug side effects, and demonstrate subcutaneous injection techniques.
* Coordinate oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer/intrauterine insemination, donor insemination, and provide appropriate counselling and support with cycle outcomes.
* Demonstrate dexterity and attention to detail in preparing equipment, maintain cleanliness and sterility, and ensure staff are trained to develop skills.
* Supervise and assist in preparation and care of the patient and partner before, during and after procedures.
* Show initiative and support medical staff with procedures such as transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval where applicable.
* Work within the legal framework as laid out by relevant acts and care quality standards; manage difficult situations with competence and support patients and multidisciplinary teams as required.
* Ensure emergency/crisis procedures are in place and staff and patients are supported during and after events.
* Adhere to COSHH, infection control, risk management, and health and safety policies; identify and minimise risks.
* Maintain accurate, confidential records in line with Trust and HFEA policy; support complaint handling per unit procedures.
* Assist with maintenance of pharmacy drug stores and controlled drugs in line with policy and legislation.
Experience and Qualifications
* 1st level registration with NMC
* Interest in women’s health
* Computer skills
* Phlebotomy
* Theatre and recovery
Desirable – previous experience in fertility or women’s health settings, educated to degree level, teaching/mentoring qualification, sonography experience

* Salary: Competitive (Depending on experience)
