An exciting opportunity for Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician(s) (PTPTs) to join the pharmacy department at University Hospitals Sussex Trust based at either Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton or Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
Applicants must have a minimum of 4 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English, ONE Science and one other GCSE, with at least Grade C. Applicants must also meet UK Apprenticeship eligibility.
Contract and Working Hours
Fixed‑term 24 months from September 2026 to September 2028. Full‑time 37.5 hours per week, with four days each week based at the chosen hospital site (Brighton or Haywards Heath) and one day per week in a virtual classroom. Rotations between sites are planned during the training period.
Main duties
* Dispense prescriptions for inpatient, outpatient and discharge medication.
* Dispense ward stock controlled drugs in accordance with legal and departmental procedures.
* Participate in pharmacy reception duties: respond to telephone calls and visitors, input prescriptions into the electronic tracking system.
* Process and assemble orders of stock items for wards, departments and other hospitals.
* Check inpatient prescriptions and identify required medications, order via EPMA, refer changes to ward pharmacy technician or pharmacist.
* Provide daily ward visits and determine suitability of Patient Own Drugs (PODs), refer to clinical team if necessary.
* Provide final accuracy check on prescribed items; give feedback or refer to pharmacist for errors.
* Contribute to service delivery on a flexible working basis, including weekends, late duties and bank holidays.
Qualifications and Training
* Minimum 4 GCSEs or equivalent including Maths, English & ONE Science and one other GCSE (at grade C or above).
Experience
* Customer service experience.
* Health service and pharmacy experience in any sector.
* Apprenticeship eligibility: resident in UK/EU for at least 3 years, no Level 3 qualification or above in the same subject, not already in formal government‑funded education.
