Wakefield Acoustics Limited are looking for an Apprentice Design Engineer to complete a Level 6 Product Design & Development degree apprenticeship and join their team.
The Apprentice Design Engineer will support the engineering team by assisting in the creation of technical drawings and 3D models, learning to use industry-standard software, and gaining hands-on experience in design processes. This role is designed to provide structured training and development, enabling the apprentice to build foundational skills in mechanical and structural design within a manufacturing environment.
The apprentice will work under the guidance of experienced engineers, contributing to real-world projects while developing their technical knowledge and understanding of engineering standards and practices.
Role & responsibilities:
* Assist in reviewing project requirements and design information
* Learn to use SolidWorks and other CAD tools to create basic models and drawings
* Gain experience in a Design for Manufacture (‘DFM’) environment, including sheet metal work machinery limitations
* Gain experience of post-fabrication finishing processes e.g. galvanising, painting
* Support the preparation of engineering documents and calculations under supervision
* Gain experience with document control systems such as SolidWorks PDM Vault
* Observe and assist in basic structural checks using SolidWorks Simulation Express
* Learn to navigate and interpret BIM models using Navisworks Freedom
* Collaborate with Sales Engineers, Project Managers, and Operations staff to understand project workflows
* Support the creation of Bills of Materials (BOMs) and sourcing of components
* Assist in producing General Arrangement Drawings and detail models for manufacturing
* Participate in design reviews and team meetings to understand project scopes and specifications
* Maintain accurate documentation and learn to follow quality assurance processes
* Develop an understanding of relevant standards (e.g., BS/Euro standards) and company procedures

We are a manufacturing company based in Wakefield. We specialise in advanced industrial, commercial and environmental noise control systems. Some of our products include acoustic doors, acoustic containers, louvers, blankets, noise havens, etc.
Things to consider:
During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Qualification Requirements:
Degree Apprenticeship entry requirements
You will needbothof the following:
* GCSE English language C or 4 or above
* GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.
You will need one of the following:
* A minimum of two A-Levels at grade B or above, including a mathematical-based subject and a science, technology, engineering or an additional mathematics-related subject
* An Engineering BTEC Level 3 with at least 120 credits at Distinction Merit (DM) level or above
* EAL Diploma in an engineering-based subject at Distinction level
* Equivalent qualifications, such as Technical Levels at DM or above.
Candidates with an HND or Foundation Degree or who have completed the second year of a degree in a relevant subject can be assessed for direct entry onto the 2nd or 3rd year of the programme (BEng top-up), but 1st year entry or an alternative pathway may still be recommended.
Candidates who have not studied in the UK can submit transcripts for qualifications equivalent to level 3 which the admissions panel will review and may be taken in lieu of the specified qualifications.
Applicants are also required to successfully complete the AMRC Training Centre and employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
