The role To assist and support teaching and learning of a child with complex medical needs. The role will include specific training for a child with a tracheostomy. The role will also include the provision of general care, safety and welfare for the child and their peers. The role will be in Reception and the desire to work collaboratively with colleagues and to be involved in the full life of the school is essential. This role will be undertaken by two people who will work alongside each other. Within the role, there will be opportunities to work within the wider classroom setting. Responsibilities: Undertake responsibility for monitoring the tracheostomy and ensuring that suctioning is carried out. Respond promptly to any issues that may arise regarding the tracheostomy. Support inclusion by enabling a child to access learning, socialising and play opportunities. Undertake learning activities and adapt according to the child’s needs. Develop positive and nurturing relationships. Work under the direction of teaching staff and SENCo. Ability to follow individual healthcare plan and risk assessments. Remain calm and efficient in an emergency situation, responding in line with specific medical training Liaise with parents, school staff and all outside agencies associated with the child. Be highly motivated and committed to support quality teaching and learning with the child at the heart of this. Commitment to inclusion and success for all. Promote positive pupil relationships and behaviour in line with school policies. Be able to inspire, motivate and support our children both educationally and with regard to wellbeing and self-esteem. Working with teachers to plan, deliver and evaluate activities. Provide feedback to the teaching team and children in relation to promote good progress. Supervise the pupil for limited and specified periods, including break-times. A good understanding of safeguarding, equal opportunities, health and safety and SEN. A strong sense of fun, enthusiasm and a motivated, engaging team member. Experience Supporting learning activities by making a contribution to supporting the teacher in the planning and evaluation and delivery of learning activities. Building positive relationships, promoting high self-esteem and resilience. Promoting high standards of behaviour in a supportive way. Supporting children with complex medical conditions. Knowledge and Skills An understanding of the different ways that children learn effectively. The ability to support children’s social, emotional and mental health needs. Knowledge of Safeguarding. Commitment to meeting the needs of all children inclusively. An awareness of the principles of effective assessment. Understanding of the statutory requirements of legislation concerning Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and SEN. Willingness to undertake specific health and medical training in line with the identified needs of specific children within school. This will include training in the management of a tracheostomy. Be able to: motivate and inspire pupils. develop good personal relationships within a team. use the learning environment to enhance achievement. use ICT effectively. engage in an active early years environment.
