Offer description

Research Associate/Fellow in Quantitative and Spatial Metabolomics for Antimicrobial Resistance

University of Nottingham – University Park

Salary: £31,387 to £46,485 per annum (minimum £35,608 with relevant PhD)

Reference: SCI006526

This position supports a £5M BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger (sLoLa) grant investigating transport mechanisms in Gram‑negative bacteria. The programme brings together investigators from the University of Nottingham, University of Birmingham, Imperial College London and the Quadram Institute to address antimicrobial resistance through bacterial membrane biology, efflux systems, antimicrobial accumulation, quantitative mass spectrometry, spatial metabolomics and mathematical modelling.

The post is based within the Centre for Analytical Bioscience (CAB) in the School of Pharmacy. CAB houses extensive specialist mass spectrometry instrumentation, including high‑resolution Orbitrap platforms (QExactive, Fusion Lumos), triple quadrupole LC‑MS/MS systems and surface and imaging MS technologies (AP‑MALDI‑MS, OrbiSIMS).

Key Responsibilities

* Design and implement advanced quantitative and spatial metabolomics workflows to characterise antimicrobial uptake, intracellular accumulation and metabolic responses in Gram‑negative bacteria.
* Generate and analyse high‑quality mass spectrometry data, performing targeted and untargeted metabolomics, multivariate statistics and other advanced data analysis techniques.
* Collaborate closely with programme investigators across partner institutions to align experimental design, data generation and interpretation across work packages.
* Contribute to consortium‑wide objectives and develop independent research directions aligned with the programme.
* Publish high‑impact outputs and build national and international collaborations.

Qualifications

* PhD (or near completion) in metabolomics, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry or a closely related discipline.
* Strong expertise in advanced mass spectrometry, including high‑resolution MS and quantitative LC‑MS/MS.
* Experience in targeted and untargeted metabolomics workflows and advanced data analysis (including multivariate statistics).
* Demonstrated excellence in research and independent working.
* Experience in spatial metabolomics or imaging mass spectrometry and familiarity with microbiological systems is advantageous.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Contract Details

This full‑time post (36.25 hours per week) is offered on a fixed‑term contract for 36 months, with the possibility of a 24‑month extension dependent on funding.
