Overview
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our Day Case Ophthalmic Surgery team. This role involves the pre-assessment, admission, and discharge of patients undergoing day case eye procedures, delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centred care.
There is also the opportunity to assist in ophthalmic theatre sessions, with full training and support provided. This is an excellent development opportunity for a nurse seeking to build skills in a specialist area within ophthalmology and perioperative care. Please note, elements of this role are physically demanding due to fast turnover of patients.
Duties
* To conduct pre-operative telephone assessments to confirm patient suitability for surgery.
* To admit patients safely on the day of surgery, ensuring all documentation is complete.
* To offer support and education before the procedure, maintaining a calm and reassuring presence.
* To ensure all discharge criteria are met post-operatively, and patients receive thorough aftercare instructions.
* To complete all records in accordance with NMC and Trust policies.
* To gather and document relevant clinical information, escalate concerns where necessary.
* To provide patients with clear pre-operative instructions and reassurance.
* To assist with patient preparation, and / or circulating for ophthalmic procedures ( training provided )
* To participate in the 5 Steps to Safer Surgery (WHO Surgical Safety Checklist), including briefing, sign-in, time-out, sign-out, and debrief.
* To maintain infection control practices and contribute to the smooth running of theatre sessions
* To support the Theatre Lead in ensuring that staffing levels and other resources match the activity of the department at all times.
* To work closely with the Theatre Lead to ensure the effective management of theatre lists.
* To ensure the clinical governance framework is maintained.
* To highlight and discuss with the Clinical Manager and Theatre Lead any potential or actual anomalies/incidents/concerns that may adversely impact on patient care, the service or the organisation.
* To ensure that any serious untoward incident (SUI), incident, near-miss or non-conformance is investigated and that any ensuing actions are documented, implemented and reviewed on a timely basis in accordance with Aspen's Clinical Governance Policy.
* To support the Theatre Lead with implementing any new theatre development or initiative.
* To maintain an effective ordering and stock control system for all consumables and drugs used within the operating department.
* To liaise with the Theatre Lead to ensure that all the equipment in the pre assessment / recovery area is subject to formal maintenance contracts, and that the equipment is maintained and repaired according to the contract schedule.
* To complete regular audits as required by the organisation or external agencies.
* To attend staff meetings as identified and work with the other colleagues in ensuring the objectives of the clinic are met.
* Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure efficient patient flow.
* Maintain high standards of care and uphold patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.
* Actively engage in reflective practice, clinical supervision, and training opportunities.
* Follow all relevant Trust policies, including those related to safeguarding, health and safety, and risk management.
* Requirements
* Valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Proven experience as a Registered Nurse.
* Essential : Proven day case experience in admititng and discharging patient undergoing surgical procedure ( Ophthalmic clinical setting - desirable )
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to empathise with patients.
* Excellent organisational skills with attention to details.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
* Knowledge of current nursing practices and procedures.
* Proficiency in using electronic health record systems is advantageous.
