A fantastic new opportunity has become available for two dedicated, skilled and detail-oriented Ornamental Gardeners at a prestigious private estate near Andover.

The site incorporates many new areas, which have been enhanced with recent planting, mature specimen trees, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, formal and informal planting, formal lawns, hedges, water features. The area maintained by the Ornamental Garden Team is the Gardens Arrival, the Main House and Courtyard Gardens, The South and West Lawn, Back Drive and Shrubbery, Estate and Staff Accommodation, Gardens surrounding the Dairy Zone and the Garden Room, and the Maze (North and South). Occasionally situations may arise that require the jobholders to perform other duties or tasks as may be requested by the Estate’s Management Team.

The new Ornamental Gardeners will be part of the gardening team. Applicants will have a passion for horticulture with a strong work ethic, they will have the opportunity to contribute to the beauty and upkeep of the gardens and will be responsible for maintaining and caring for the gardens under the guidance of the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Head Gardener.

As a one of the Ornamental Gardeners you will perform general garden care and maintenance duties including; assisting the Team Leader in planning and executing garden maintenance tasks, performing regular watering, weeding, pruning, and fertilising of plants; and monitoring / controlling pests and diseases in the garden. The Ornamental Gardeners will also maintain garden tools and equipment in good working condition; plant, cultivate, and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants; and assist in the implementation of landscaping projects.

Attention to detail is important in the role and requires frequent inspection of all areas, including those not seen regularly, to ensure they are tidy and free of weeds; paying special attention to high-traffic areas in the garden and ensuring that they are kept in pristine condition; respecting the privacy of the estate’s residents and guests at all times.

The successful candidates will work collaboratively with other members of the garden team to ensure efficient operations and coverage of all tasks and communicate effectively with the Team Leader regarding any issues, supply needs, or maintenance concerns. They will assist in managing gardening supplies and equipment, ensuring that all items are stocked and in good working condition and report any maintenance or repair needs to your Team Leader promptly.

It is important the Ornamental Gardeners ensure all their activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations and best practices; read and understand any risk assessments; and follow / implement safety protocols as directed by the Team Leaders and Head Gardener.

Together, the team ensure that the owner, all residents, team members and visitors on the Estate enjoy a welcoming and well-maintained environment, regardless of the weather or any operational challenges that may arise.

Our client is looking for Ornamenal Gardeners to have previous practical experience in gardening or landscaping, with a solid understanding of plant care and maintenance techniques, including glasshouse production and containerised plants. An RHS Level 2 qualification or equivalent is also desirable. Relevant machinery certifications are preferred, such as those for compact tractors, small utility vehicles, and PA1 and PA6a, along with experience using horticultural power tools. The ideal candidates will demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Strong communication skills and a professional demeanour are essential, as is the physical stamina to perform manual labour. A certification in horticulture or a related field is a plus, and a valid UK driver’s licence is required. Attention to detail, a commitment to maintaining high standards, and excellent time management and task prioritisation skills are key. The successful applicants must also be discreet, reliable, trustworthy, and capable of maintaining confidentiality. A proactive, flexible, and adaptable attitude, coupled with a strong work ethic and a willingness to assist other Estate teams when needed, is highly valued.

This position requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. The Gardeners will work in various areas of the Estate and may be required to work flexible hours, including weekends as needed, of which time off in lieu will be given.

SALARY: £30,000 – £35,000 DOE
