Lexden Wood Golf Club, established in 1993, is a progressive golf club that has undergone significant transformation under new ownership since December 2024. Located in Colchester, the club has seen substantial investment in course improvements including robot mowers, new eco bunkers, fixed irrigation systems, new paths, modern signage, new buggies, and updated machinery. With ambitious plans for the future, we are seeking a Deputy Head Greenkeeper to join our team and play a key role in helping us deliver the highest standards of course presentation and maintenance.The Deputy Head Greenkeeper will support the Head Greenkeeper in the day to day management of the golf course and lead the team in their absence. The role will involve staff supervision and mentoring, preparation and maintenance of all playing surfaces to the highest standard, operation and upkeep of course machinery, and assisting with projects that form part of the club's long term development plan. You will be responsible for health and safety compliance, budget management, agronomic planning, and tournament preparation. The successful candidate will be expected to set a good example, contribute ideas and take on responsibility for areas such as irrigation management, spraying programs, machinery care, and the operation of our new robot mower systems.This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to step into a senior leadership role within a forward-thinking club with significant investment in modern technology and course development.
Key Responsibilities:
* Supervise, schedule, and mentor the greenkeeping team, embrace the use of online task management systems
* Lead the team in the absence of the Head Greenkeeper
* Manage health and safety compliance, including risk assessments and safe working practices
* Assist with budget management, ordering supplies, and cost control
* Program and maintain robot mower systems (training provided)
* Oversee bunker construction and maintenance
* Develop and implement agronomic plans including fertilizer programs and disease management
* Prepare the course for tournaments and events to the highest standards
* Communicate effectively with members and management regarding course conditions
* Manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
* Support environmental and sustainability initiatives
The successful candidate will:
* Hold a minimum of Level 3 qualification in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent)
* Have at least 5 years' greenkeeping experience, with demonstrable leadership experience
* Possess PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates
* Have good knowledge of irrigation systems
* Demonstrate strong mechanical skills for day-to-day machinery care and maintenance
* Hold a full UK driving license (essential)
* Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Possess knowledge of agronomy and integrated pest management
* Be enthusiastic, reliable, and able to lead by example within the team
* Be flexible to work weekends, early mornings, and during peak season
* Have experience with GPS-guided equipment and modern greenkeeping technology
* First Aid certification (desirable)
* Chainsaw/brush cutter certifications (desirable)
