Assistant Director of Nursing / AHPs (Band 8B)

Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting senior leadership opportunity within the Medicine Division. Reporting to the Divisional Director of Nursing, you will play a key role in the Care Group leadership team, driving strategy, service transformation, and the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop nursing/AHP teams.
  • Ensure quality, safety and clinical governance.
  • Drive service improvement and transformation.
  • Plan workforce and secure safe staffing.
  • Manage budget and resources.
  • Oversee risk, incidents and complaints.
  • Deliver strategic objectives and promote education, research and evidence‑based practice.

Job Overview

Accountable to the Divisional Director of Nursing/AHPs, the post holder is an integral member of the Care Group Leadership Team, delivering professional, managerial and clinical leadership for Nursing services within the Care Group. The role focuses on improving the patient experience through high‑quality, safe and effective care.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

  • First Level nurse with current NMC Registration or AHP with HCPC registration.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent in relevant discipline.
  • Evidence of education to master’s level or equivalent experience.
  • Post‑registration continuous professional development.
  • Post‑graduate/registration management or training qualification /equivalent.
  • Evidence of leadership development.

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary issues in Nursing/AHP and its implications for the workforce and future health care delivery.
  • Understanding of governance arrangements, NHS standards and wider health and social care economy.
  • Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion issues.
  • Competence in financial, management, budgetary and workforce information systems.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit.

Experience

  • Significant management and leadership experience at a senior level.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading clinical innovation or change.
  • Experience in workforce planning and financial management.
  • Experience in developing nursing practice and meeting quality and patient safety objectives.
  • Evidence of operational judgement in complex situations.
  • Networking and working across organisational and professional boundaries.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and coaching skills with an enabling style.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, facilitation and communication skills.
  • Problem‑solving and influencing abilities.
  • Project management and implementation of improvement models.
  • Audit and research skills to inform practice and business cases.
  • Analytical decision‑making under pressure.
  • IT literacy with standard office and bespoke systems.
