The Role
We are seeking to recruit a Research Assistant/Associate to undertake work as part of our NU Solve programme.
in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics (MSP) has a track record of applying world-class academic expertise to businesses, industry, and wider society. From bespoke training and research to commercial consultancy, NU Solve works with external organisations in the fields of mathematics, statistics, data science and physics to make real impact outside of academia and to interdicsiplinary research. NU Solve also operates a drop-in clinic for University staff to get help with their statistics and data science problems.
NU Solve has a new role for a statistician to work on a diverse range of projects with business, industry and government partners and academics across Newcastle University.
The role will expand the capacity of NU Solve to develop closer partnerships with external organisations and other Schools and Institutes, and to broaden the scope of activity for the School of MSP in the area of statistics and data science. This will help to strengthen and expand our School business, innovation and skills activities, such as our new
Working with academics and professional services staff across the School and Faculty, the role will work flexibly across commercial consulting projects, skills and continuing professional development (CPD) training and research projects.
The position is full time, available for a fixed period of 24 months in the first instance.

Key Accountabilities
The role is at the Research Associate/Assistant level, based within NU Solve in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics. The successful applicant will work under direct academic and NU Solve manager supervision. The successful applicant will:
1. Work on a diverse range of external projects with industry, business and government partners
2. Deliver consulting, skills and CPD training and applied research projects. You can find examples of previous projects
3. Help develop closer partnerships with businesses, industry and external agencies, broadening activity for the School in statistics, mathematics, and data science
4. Work with School and Faculty facilitators and School academics

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
5. Broad knowledge of statisticsSkills in programming languages such as R and/or Python
6. Experience of applying statistics to solve complex real-world problems
7. Ability to handle a diverse portfolio of work, across a range of project types
8. Ability to analyse large, complex and imperfect datasets
Desirable
9. Broad knowledge of mathematics
10. Experience in writing research publications
11. Expertise in data science and machine learning
12. Additional software skills such as Shiny, LaTeX, Tidyverse, Tableau, C/C++, Java, GitHub
13. Experience in report writing for projects underpinned statistics

Qualifications
20. PhD awarded (for Associate level) or nearing completion (for Assistant level) in statistics or a closely related discipline
