As Senior Project Engineer the primary purpose of your role will be:
Responsibilities
* Provide and coordinate operational / matrix function input into the Pre‑Contract phase of each project to ensure a robust target cost, risk register and delivery plan.
* Enhance and maximise the potential profitability of each project up to the substantial completion of detailed design and placement of all major subcontracts.
* Ensure a robust and wholistic delivery plan is in place for all site‑based stages of delivery before any work on site.
* Undertake the role of Design Management Lead (DML) under our Business Management System (BMS).
* Develop relationships, systems and processes to provide effective coordination across all designers, client, supply chain, procurement, planners and GT delivery to ensure cost efficient and effective delivery planning of civil, mechanical and electrical elements.
* Get involved in the Pre‑Contact award phase and work closely with the Pre‑Con team providing operational input (delivery planning, programme, constructability, matrix engagement).
* Understand and support Pre‑Con activities to ensure a seamless transition from the Pre‑Con team to the operational team by contract award.
* Manage the Detailed Design and Procurement phase to achieve client approval, GT validation sign‑offs and maximise programme and procurement savings.
* Ensure engineering service provides the right quality of design deliverables in line with programme requirements through proactive quality checks and stretch target dates.
* Plan, coordinate and implement any advanced site activities (surveys, trial holes, inspections) required to support design/delivery planning.
* Operate rigorous change control procedures, keep the SPM/PM ahead of change, assess impact quickly and be decisive about moving forward.
* Maximise procurement opportunities through buying strategy, create time in design process and keep subcontract enquiry packages ready well in advance.
* Participate in client framework supplier selection where required and challenge restricting suppliers.
* Provide a suitable project delivery plan and procurement schedules with buildability and temporary works reviews.
* Provide an effective civil, mechanical and electrical technical interface with the client.
* Coordinate, challenge and optimise civil, mechanical and electrical technical solutions, maintaining compliance with design and regulatory requirements.
* Be the key interface coordinator with the supply chain ensuring robust enquiry quality and quotation assessment before contracts are placed.
* Ensure early involvement of key functions (H&S, quality, environmental) to verify a robust final solution and delivery plan before site.
* Ensure early engagement with commissioning & asset integration manager before site design phase.
* Report into the Risk Manager on all aspects of civil and mechanical delivery including performance, forecasting and key issues.
* Focus positively on the client and customer at all times.
* Understand and implement quality, safety and environmental policies and targets.
* Participate in creating a safe working environment and establish a reputation for project delivery excellence, particularly in design and procurement phases.
Qualifications & Experience
* Minimum HND/HNC in a related engineering discipline (BEng/MEng preferred).
* Strong construction/engineering background, preferably in water/wastewater or related project delivery and design.
* Proven technical ability and good commercial & contractual awareness.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to listen, motivate and manage others; team player.
* Experience in procurement strategy, change control and supplier management.
* Strong negotiation skills and ability to work within strict deadlines.
* Proficient computer and IT skills.
* IOSH 1‑day Working Safely or equivalent preferred.
* Can do, will do approach to project delivery; general management and leadership skills.
* Previously worked in delivery of large civil and mechanical projects with successful cost and schedule performance.
