The Opportunity
We are looking for a structural engineer to join our growing and dynamic Precast Technical Solutions team. Precast Technical Solutions (PTS) is an integral part of the Explore Manufacturing Design Centre, established to provide end-to-end leadership and best practice in precast design and engineering throughout the full design process. This role offers an opportunity to be at the forefront of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) in the UK, with teams developing and delivering innovative solutions, utilising products produced through our own manufacturing facility, the Centre for Excellence for Modern Construction (CEMC).
At Explore Manufacturing, we produce a variety of precast concrete products, many requiring bespoke solutions. The Structural Engineer will provide structural engineering design support to reduce risk and ensure safety throughout the product's lifecycle, and contribute to Tenders and Pre-Construction Service Agreement (PCSA) engagements for all DfMA projects across Building Structures, Facades, and Infrastructure. The role also involves producing permanent designs of some precast elements and related supporting structures.
The individual will collaborate closely with the production team to assess temporary works and lifting design requirements, develop engineering solutions, and work with bid teams to evaluate existing designs and develop alternative DfMA product-based designs during tenders to enable robust pricing and risk assessment. The engineering team also plays a key role in reducing environmental impact, aligning with Laing O'Rourke's target to become a net zero carbon company by 2050.
What will the role look like?
* Providing and checking precast structural designs throughout the product lifecycle (manufacture, lifting, handling, storage, transport, and installation).
* Reviewing project specifications to develop designs that meet structural requirements.
* Offering value engineering to identify optimal solutions for engineering challenges.
* Collaborating internally and externally to develop products that meet structural, manufacturing, and client requirements.
* Conceptualising how in-situ schemes can be converted into precast components, including connection strategies and designs.
* Providing structural design assessments for tenders at RIBA Stage 2/3, utilising the CEMC product set.
* Applying innovative approaches to engineering problems to improve efficiencies and reduce carbon and material usage.
* Understanding Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles, materials, processes, and manufacturing constraints, and conducting conversion designs to ensure feasibility.
What Skills and Experience are we looking for?
* Self-motivated and proactive individual capable of working independently and as part of a team.
* Strong problem-solving skills and confidence to enforce safe designs.
* At least 2 years' relevant experience, preferably in a structural design engineering role.
* Experience with CAD packages, including Revit, and eagerness to expand skills in this area.
* Knowledge of design and analysis software (e.g., TEDDS, Scia Engineer).
* Understanding of site construction techniques and building design principles.
* Familiarity with precast concrete manufacturing and assembly methods and associated costs.
