Job Overview
An experienced Approved Electrician responsible for installation, maintenance, fault-finding, and commissioning of electrical systems on a water utility site. The role focuses on control panels, instrumentation, and power distribution systems supporting water treatment and pumping operations.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Installation & Wiring
* Install, terminate, and test power cables (LV systems, typically 415V/240V).
* Carry out containment installation (tray, trunking, conduit).
* Wire motors, pumps, and associated equipment.
* Ensure all work complies with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
Control Panels & Systems
* Build, wire, and modify control panels from schematics.
* Work with PLC panels, relays, contactors, and instrumentation.
* Interpret electrical drawings (schematics, GA layouts, loop diagrams).
* Assist in integration with automation systems such as SCADA.
Testing & Inspection
* Perform inspection and testing in line with IET Wiring Regulations.
* Complete Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs).
* Carry out fault diagnosis using test equipment (multimeters, insulation testers).
Water Industry Equipment
* Work on pumps, motors, level sensors, flow meters, and dosing systems.
* Maintain electrical systems at treatment works, pumping stations, or reservoirs.
* Understand basic process control in water treatment environments.
⚠️ Health, Safety & Compliance
* Follow strict site safety rules, including:
* Permit-to-work systems
* Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO)
* Comply with Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
* Work in hazardous environments (e.g., confined spaces, wet areas) when required.
Qualifications & Requirements
* NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
* City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing) – preferred
* 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
* ECS Gold Card (Approved Electrician)
* Experience in industrial or water utility environments
Skills & Experience
* Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
* Experience with control panels and industrial automation
* Ability to read and work from technical drawings
* Knowledge of motor control circuits (DOL, star-delta, VSDs)
* Familiarity with PLC systems
Working Environment
* Water treatment plants / pumping stations
* Outdoor and indoor industrial environments
* May involve standby or call-out rota
* Work at height, confined spaces, and wet conditions
