About the opportunity
Amentum is currently recruiting for a Principal Process Engineer to join our Energy Business. Engineering & Technical Solutions (ETS) is entering an exciting phase of opportunity by supporting our key client’s UK nuclear fleet through a business transformation, and by supporting new small modular reactor (SMR) developers. Our work is varied; covering New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, and our capabilities are in demand across the nuclear sector. Amentum offers flexible and hybrid working options, with the base office locations being Knutsford, Warrington, Stockton-on-Tees, Gloucester, or Bristol, with potential travel to other sites and offices as required.
You will report into the Process Engineering Lead and work closely with other engineers across the business.
The successful candidate must be highly motivated, proactive, and eager to develop their technical skills and mentor junior engineers. Experience in civil, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries is essential, with familiarity with working in regulated environments and delivering work to high HSSE standards in compliance with HSSE regulations.
Key responsibilities:
* Support various nuclear clients, providing process design and assurance in areas including:
* Nuclear new build
* Technical assurance of design reports prior to submission to clients or regulators
* Design justification or assessment of process plants for safety reports
* Participate in Feasibility and Optioneering Studies
* Serve as Technical or Discipline Lead
* Lead HAZOP and Hazard Identification Studies
* Develop Process Design
* Lead small multidisciplinary teams, including external partners and client teams
* Produce and review process deliverables such as:
* Process flow sheets, PFDs/P&IDs
* Datasheets and calculations
* Basis of Design documents
* Process descriptions
What you'll need:
Qualifications and experience:
* Degree in chemical engineering or equivalent experience through apprenticeship
* Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
* Experience in front-end engineering design through to full lifecycle projects
* Broad process understanding for diverse projects and clients
* Knowledge of civil nuclear plant systems, conventional power plant technology, structures, and assessment guidelines is advantageous
Desired skills:
* Thermodynamics
* Fluid flow and fluid mechanics
* Steam system design
* Equipment sizing (pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels)
* Solids handling
* Self-motivated with collaborative mindset
* Innovative problem-solving skills
