Job Overview

We have a post in Haematology and Blood Transfusion available for a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist to run our new LAMP HbS Service.

Our laboratory is accredited to UKAS ISO:15189, MHRA, IIP and is an IBMS training laboratory for both registration and specialist portfolios leading to HCPC registration.


Main duties of the job

* Ensure personal competency on the LAMP section and with molecular‑based techniques.
* Work towards competency in all areas of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
* Specialise in an area of Blood Sciences to meet the knowledge and competency level of a Specialist Practitioner via a recognised portfolio route or equivalent experience.
* Use knowledge, interpretive skills, complex analysers and IT to deliver Blood sciences Service to our users.
* Perform initial screening and further investigation of specialist diagnostic tests producing complex quality diagnostic results to aid patient treatment and care.
* Authorise reports as directed by department procedures and guidelines.
* Train other staff as required and directed.
* Work flexible hours as the service requires once appropriately trained.


Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Work as part of a team producing accurate diagnostic results.
* Liaise with military staff both within the laboratory and as one of our service users.
* Perform tasks as directed within any given role/section, cooperating with other staff to ensure quality service delivery for the service users.
* Follow Standard Operating Procedures and proactively develop them, suggesting improvements and piloting revised SOPs.
* Use judgement, knowledge and departmental guidelines to authorise diagnostic results and report them as per departmental protocols.
* Refer to more senior scientific or medical staff as required.
* Fully participate in all aspects of the service including routine, non‑core and shift service, as appropriate.
* Ensure that results and reports are produced in a timely manner, particularly where they have an immediate impact on patient care, to meet departmental and Trust turnaround times.
* Use reagent and other stocks efficiently, informing line manager of stock issues and contacting suppliers as directed by senior staff.
* Perform simple problem‑solving and troubleshooting on equipment within expected competency level to resolve problems/breakdowns.

Qualifications


Essential criteria

* BSc in Biomedical Sciences
* HCPC Registration in Biomedical Sciences
* IBMS Certificate of Competence (Registration Portfolio) (Band 5)
* Educational qualification in mathematics
* ECDL


Desirable criteria

* BSc Hons in IBMS accredited degree
* IBMS Specialist Diploma or IBMS Diploma in Biomedical Science
* IBMS associate


Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of working in a relevant medical laboratory
* Experience in working in a laboratory
* Awareness of Pathology H&S procedures


Desirable criteria

* Experience of molecular techniques, including LAMP


Skills and Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Able to follow Standard Operating Procedures
* Evidence of maintenance of practical skills
* Ability to organise own work to fit with departmental or section rotas
* Understanding of robust quality management system, internal & external
* Communication skills in all media including e‑mail, phone
* Ability to use in‑house IT systems
* Ability to perform scientific calculations and data analysis
* Competent in use of main Microsoft software applications
* Ability to ensure good laboratory practice


Desirable criteria

* Understanding of audit process
* Ability to produce documents such as departmental reports if required
* Ability to perform statistical analysis of data and interpretation


Special Requirements


Essential criteria

* Ability to travel across other sites for training, meetings and covering duties
