Main area Dental Services Grade NHS AfC: Band 4. Contract Permanent. Hours: Full time or Part time (37.5 hours per week, 1.6 WTE — 1 full-time new post, 0.6 (22.5 hours) replacement). Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital to recruit qualified dental nurses (full and part time) to work predominantly in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Surgery department of the hospital. Successful qualified dental nurses should have the NVQ level 3 in Oral Healthcare, National Certificate in Dental Nursing qualification or equivalent.

Candidates must demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, be hard-working, and have the ability to assist clinical dental staff, including undergraduate and postgraduate students during the treatment and care of patients. They must ensure Health and Safety policies are carried out and assist other dental nurses in fulfilling Departmental Policies and Procedures. Candidates should be flexible and willing to work in the evening when necessary. There will be opportunities to further their career in dental nursing; candidates should show commitment to professional development.

Main duties of the job

Candidates must demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, be hardworking, and have the ability to assist clinical dental staff, including undergraduate and postgraduate students during the treatment and care of patients.

Receive and prepare patients to undertake general, complex and specialised dental treatment, assisting consultants/clinical dental staff and students during the treatment and care of the patients until they leave. (Including out-of-hours transport patients).

Assist the dentist to reassure and inform the patient about their treatment and appointments, being aware of body language and cultural difficulties and dealing with these in a sensitive and appropriate manner. Show empathy and reassurance at all times.

Provide close chairside assistance, anticipating the clinicians’ requirements to ensure efficient and effective patient care.

Maintain close liaison with the clinician in the care, observation and supervision of patients with special needs or those unsuitable to be seen in general dental practice or by general dental practitioners with complex medical histories.

Qualifications

* Registered Dental Nurse (internal newly qualified nurses would need registration before being moved to a band 4 salary)
* National Certificate or NVQ level 3 in Oral Healthcare
* Worked within a hospital setting


Experience

* Experience and knowledge of chairside assisting for all dental procedures
* Experience in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Surgery


Further Training

* Ability to work 4 handed dentistry/close support
* Able to prioritise and use own initiative
* Confidentiality
* Information Technology
* Commitment to develop skills and undertake further training
* Ability to work on own initiative
