Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Senior Electrical Estimator to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
Responsibilities
* Work as a senior figure in the Estimating team, including managing workload allocation of estimating resources within assigned bid teams and undertaking the role of Estimator where required.
* Contribute to meeting the customer’s cost forecasting and reporting requirements within the formats agreed in the contract.
* Oversee and interrogate design options and value solutions, identifying the attractiveness of a project based on sound estimating principles.
* Review drawings and specifications to prepare accurate costing sheets for materials, labour and equipment.
* Ensure compliance with Balfour Beatty procedures, including the pre‑construction gate process.
* Review contract submission requirements, ensuring all financial information is identified and provided and accurate compliant design proposals are included.
* Establish and agree key plant rates.
* Agree with engineering and planning on key methods, outputs and plant selection.
* Conduct detailed analysis of subcontractor estimates.
* Manage and coordinate the preparation of preliminary and general expense pricing, including plant schedules and risk assessment.
* Prepare settlement papers and carry out any adjustments required.
* Sign off all cost elements prior to financial submissions.
* Work with suitable subcontractors and specialists to update cost forecasts and reports.
* Ensure key specialists are utilised on each bid to optimise design, specification, programme and value.
* Manage the production of cost information and submissions for senior management.
* Provide considered responses to customer questions including post‑tender queries.
* Ensure that the project commercial team receives an effective handover of bid documentation.
* Manage customer contact, present proposals at the customer and contribute to customer meetings during the project.
* Lead the development and implementation of appropriate digital toolsets for cost take‑off and other estimating activities, such as 5D cost planning.
* Ensure that cost planning and estimating are accurate and reflect project requirements and risk profile.
* Provide mentoring on bids to Estimators and the bid teams, including commercial and technical advice.
* Carry out measurement and take‑offs, pricing and entry into the system.
* Live the Balfour Beatty Values.
* Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
* Support the delivery of Balfour Beatty Sustainability activities.
* Monitor performance and quality of selected Cost Consultants throughout the project cycle and ensure validation of their outputs such as Bills of Quantities.
* Input into continuous improvement on bids, including presentation media and strategy papers for Senior Management to guide project pricing and the development of cost management systems and tools.
Qualifications
* Detailed knowledge of electrical services including HV/LV & instrumentation.
* Experience of tendering projects in the petrochemical, nuclear or regulated environments.
* Experience of NAECI Labour agreements.
* Experience of pricing and developing customer MTOs.
* Previous experience of managing the estimating process for construction projects.
* Membership of a relevant professional body and/or qualification is desirable (e.g., RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE, CIBSE).
* Knowledge of best practice solutions and optimisation of innovative ideas, understanding of Lean Construction and 5D cost planning.
* Understanding of BIM: reading and assembling BIM models and producing appropriate reports.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure.
* Experience leading a team is desirable; a strong team player who can initiate work independently.
* Willingness to continuously pursue innovation and development, focusing on the customer and business needs.
* Proficiency in IT, numeracy and MS Office plus estimating systems.
* Passion and excitement for work, tackling problems head‑on and resolving them promptly.
