We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our Ophthalmology Directorate as Service Manager. This is a key leadership role within one of the largest, most innovative and fastest‑growing Ophthalmology services in the region.
As Service Manager, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across all non‑clinical aspects of the service. Working closely with the Deputy Operations Director, Operations Director, Clinical Director and service leads, you will drive high‑quality, safe and efficient delivery of care across our outpatient, diagnostic, surgical and treatment pathways.
You will play a central role in shaping service transformation, enhancing patient flow, supporting workforce development, and ensuring that performance, quality and financial targets are consistently met. Main duties of the job
Lead and manage non‑clinical teams, fostering a supportive and high‑performing culture.
Ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services, teaching and research.
Drive delivery of activity, waiting time and performance targets.
Lead service redesign, improvement projects and innovation across the directorate.
Manage financial and workforce resources, including budgets, recruitment and workforce planning.
Oversee service planning, business cases and annual reports in line with Trust and national priorities.
Ensure robust communication channels within the directorate and with external partners.
Champion equality, diversity and patient involvement across all areas of service.
Ensure that the operational and financial requirements of the service/s are effectively managed and co‑ordinated.
Lead and coordinate the delivery plans for the service/s ensuring that service capacity is well used, and information reporting requirements are met.

Our Ophthalmology services operate from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the state‑of‑the‑art Northern General Eye Centre, supported by the James West Treatment Centre and a developed Minor Operations Suite.
We provide a comprehensive range of general and subspecialist Ophthalmology services for Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw region, including glaucoma, vitreoretinal, cataract, medical retinal and diabetes. Specialist clinics are available for paediatrics, low vision and nurse led pre and post‑operative screening service.
You will join a highly committed, multidisciplinary team delivering high‑quality, specialist patient care across a dynamic and expanding service.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Relevant Degree in Management/Healthcare or significant experience of operational management within the NHS
* Masters Degree (Management, Business or Health care related)
Experience
* Detailed knowledge of national NHS agenda
* Experience of patient targets including waiting list management, clinical services, commissioning, service planning etc
* Extensive knowledge of risk issues and management
* Significant staff management experience including setting of objectives, team and individual appraisals
* Extensive knowledge and experience of full range of HR processes and policies including recruitment and disciplinary issues.
* High levels of IT literacy (e.g. Advanced Excel Training) with demonstrable experience in managing complex software systems and databases
* Financial management including experience of reducing costs, monitoring and determine corrective action of large budgets and contracts
* Proven ability to analyse and interpret complex and sometimes conflicting guidance and data and produce reports to national standards and tight deadlines
* Experience of leading service improvement or modernisation initiatives in the NHS
* Sound negotiator. Influential with credibility in the clinical setting.
* Excellent team management and leadership skills including change management and workforce redesign
* A detailed understanding of clinical and corporate governance
* Experience of risk issues and management
* Experience of training and disseminating information
* Experience of implementing IT system projects
* Proven ability to manage budgets and contracts within an NHS environment.
Skills
* Proven ability to prioritise own and others workload and responsibilities within a pressurised work environment.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and presentational) with ability to liaise and collaborate with all levels of staff at Trust and national level.
* Able to handle and resolve conflicts and deal with a diverse range of situations including conflict, hostile and emotive environments.
* Understand the importance of staff training/ development and possess excellent coaching and facilitating skills.

* Proven experience of representing services at a national level.
