Job Overview
Welcome to CNWL Community Eating Disorders Service for Children and Young People.

Eating Disorders is a specialism within children’s mental health. The successful candidate will be offered training in Family Based Treatment (FBT) and Family Therapy (FT-AN) for Eating Disorders; the role requires delivery of these treatments.

As part of this role you are expected to deliver FBT or FT-AN, for which training will be provided. The team delivers systemic therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and also offers a parent group to support carers. We link with CNWL CAMHS for joint work with co-morbidities and other agencies as necessary. The team comprises nursing, occupational therapists, psychologist, assistant psychologists, systemic Family therapist, a dietician, paediatrician and psychiatry. We are expanding into the use of systemic practitioners and developing nurses to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner level. The leads of the service are a Clinical Team Lead and Consultant Psychiatrist; it is linked to the ED service overseen by Head of ED and a Clinical Director for ED. Recent developments include improved transition work and a new Intensive Community Treatment Team with partners at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Working for our organisation: since Covid-19 we have adjusted working practices and staff typically work from home 1 day a week, dependent on service need. We promote flexible working and provide remote working system via laptops. Our main base is in Chelsea (near Chelsea and Westminster Hospital). A second site is in Harrow at Roxborough Road. We also facilitate hospital visits across 5 hospitals within our catchment area in London.

Typical responsibilities

* Undertake processing of new referrals to the service as part of the duty rota, including telephone enquiries, screening and managing new referrals.
* Assess, plan and provide clinical interventions relevant to the patient group (FBT, FT-AN, supportive clinical management, and other evidence-based models of care); facilitate physical health monitoring clinics.
* Liaise with referrers and offer training, advice and consultation to medical wards, primary and secondary care services and other external agencies as required.
* Work with young people to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care; deliver FBT and FT-AN treatments to families; develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with young people and families/carers.
* Liaise with the young person’s professional network; promote multi-agency collaboration; involve the young person and families in delivering treatment programs.
* Attend and participate in clinical meetings as part of the multidisciplinary team; receive supervision of clinical work; maintain clinical records in line with NMC standards and CNWL policies.
* Participate in recruitment, induction, supervision, appraisal and development of staff; supervise junior clinicians; monitor physical and mental health issues related to eating disorders.
* Undertake venepuncture and ECG procedures or willingness to be trained; knowledge of safeguarding processes.

Another key part of this role is being a FREED Champion. FREED stands for First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders and is a service model for 16-25-year-olds with recent onset disorders. Duties include involvement in the FREED mini team, assessing FREED pathway patients, attending meetings and data collection.

Person specification

Experience – Essential criteria

* Post registration clinical experience
* Experience of working in eating disorders
* Experience of managing a caseload as Keyworker or care coordination within a ward or community setting
* Experience of supervising student nurses
* Experience of nursing assessments and formulating safe care plans
* Experience of working therapeutically with patients with eating disorders and psychiatric/medical co-morbidities

Desirable criteria

* Experience of specialist assessments for eating disorders in a community setting
* Therapy qualification or therapy skills training relevant to eating disorders
* Involvement in audit and research; transferable skills to eating disorders

Skills and Knowledge – Essential criteria

* Good knowledge of Care Programme Approach, Mental Health Act, supervised discharge and current legislation
* Excellent risk assessment and mental health assessment skills
* Experience in assessment and treatment planning for mental health needs
* Knowledge of eating disorders and current treatments; evidence-based practice
* Working knowledge of CAMHS-related legislation; good physical care skills related to eating disorders in children and young people
* Ability to work independently, manage a stressful workload, and use time effectively
* Excellent record keeping and report writing; proficient in computer skills for electronic patient records
* Ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams and other agencies; understanding of family/carer issues

Desirable criteria

* Family work skills
* Knowledge of current nursing and mental health care issues; ability to manage conflict
* Group facilitation skills

Qualifications – Essential criteria

* RMN (Current NMC registration)
* Mentorship Training

Further qualifications – Desirable

* Evidence of regular updating in nursing practice since qualification
* Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) training
* Degree or postgraduate qualification relevant to the post
