Band 7 Occupational Therapist - Trauma and Orthopaedics

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Trauma and Orthopaedic therapy team at Barnet Hospital as a Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist, on a permanent, full-time basis.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic individual with a visionary outlook to join our team, where you will be able to develop specialist occupational therapy knowledge and skills within the specialty of trauma and orthopaedics.

You will be joining a friendly, dynamic and cohesive integrated therapy team which prides itself on close working relationships within the MDT.

The team also has strong links with the orthopaedic therapy teams at the other hospitals within the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, as well as community services, local rehabilitation services and the North East London and Essex trauma network.

Within the Band 7 role, you will assess and treat patients with a variety of orthopaedic injuries, including neck of femur fractures, upper limb, lower limb, and spinal injuries, as well as patients following complex elective orthopaedic surgery, working closely with other health and social care professionals to ensure excellent patient care throughout the patient journey.


Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will be expected to manage their own clinical caseload autonomously, including complex patient presentations, by utilising a high level of clinical reasoning, organisational and prioritisation skills. They must be flexible to fluctuating priorities, enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and be able to demonstrate efficient and effective discharge planning. They will need to apply excellent communication skills with MDT colleagues, including attending daily board rounds, MDT and other meetings.

You will be required to teach, supervise and appraise junior staff and students, whilst being supported by other highly skilled and experienced band 7 therapists. You will be expected to have an active role in developing the orthopaedic service at Barnet Hospital, and support the Clinical Lead therapist to ensure that the service continues to run smoothly and effectively through careful operational planning.

This is a permanent, full time (37.5 hour) position. The post holder will also be required to work bank holidays and weekends, in line with the department's 7-day working policy.

Job responsibilities

Full details of the job duties/responsibilities can be found in the attached job description document and are summarised below:

To undertake a role in the day-to-day management of patients on the trauma orthopaedic wards and orthopaedic patients on outlying wards.To provide specialist assessment and treatment to patients who may have complex and or chronic conditions as an autonomous practitioner.To work with patients and their families or carers to provide excellent individualised patient-centred care.To actively participate in the planning of complex discharges.To work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary service. This will include initiating and participating in case conferences, MDT meetings, ward rounds and trauma meetings.To supervise, teach and appraise more junior members of staff and students.To participate in Continuing Professional Development and quality improvement projects that will enhance the therapy service.To support the smooth and effective running of the service through careful operational planning, alongside Band 7 therapy colleagues and the Clinical Lead therapist for the team.

Education & Professional Qualifications

* Current HCPC registration
* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Demonstration of commitment to life-long learning
* RCOT/BAOT membership or member of special interest group


Experience

* Evidence of CPD in relevant areas of practice
* Post registration experience relevant to clinical area
* Extensive experience working in an acute health setting and complex discharge planning
* Experience in supervising/teaching staff/student/volunteers
* Leadership and first line management experience
* Experience and involvement of audit


Skill and aptitudes

* Effective written and verbal communication skills to a range of audiences
* Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning skills and management of complex cases.
* Ability to relate clinical knowledge to practice.
* Able to work independently as an autonomous practitioner
* Ability to work as part of a team including MDT
* Good organisational skills
* Reflect and critically appraise own performance.
