About The Role
Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced and influential Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) to join our team on a major project along the North East coast, in a site‑based leadership role.
What you'll be doing
As a key partner to the HSW Director, you will help shape and deliver our Zero Harm Strategy, driving exceptional HSW performance and ensuring we meet our operational requirements. You will lead and develop a high‑performing HSW team, build strong relationships with regulators, customers, JV partners and the supply chain, and provide robust assurance through compliance evaluations, site tours and audits. You will oversee performance reviews using leading and lagging indicators, investigate incidents in line with Balfour Beatty standards, and ensure lessons learned are embedded across the business, while championing continuous improvement and a culture of safety excellence.
Responsibilities
* Work with the HSW Director, to develop and ensure the delivery of the Business Unit/Project Zero Harm Strategy.
* Manage the recruitment and development of HSW professionals within their chain of command, including coaching and mentoring as required.
* Develop professional relationships with regulators, customers JV partners and supply chain.
* Undertake health and safety compliance evaluations, tours and audits as required and ensure sufficient assurance of project activities.
* In conjunction with Executive General Managers / Managing Directors / Directors, carry out project and business sector HS&E performance reviews and reporting using lagging and leading indicators.
* Review and investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned across the business, ensuring actions are through the serious incident review process.
* Work with the wider BB HSW team to promote Zero Harm and continuous improvement of performance.
The Following Qualities/Experience Are Essential
* Corporate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or working towards).
* NEBOSH Diploma or NCRQ qualification.
* Must have detailed, technical knowledge and experience Health and safety legislation, regulations and guidance.
* Construction industry experience (or experience in an equivalent sector) and in particular CDM (where work within a specific construction sector experience is advantageous then specify).
* Must have prior experience of providing leadership and support to operational and functional teams and of working at a senior level.
* Be willing and able to be on site 5 days per week.
