Overview
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Consultant Gastroenterologist with an interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease to join the William Harvey Hospital team at Ashford. We have approximately 5400 IBD patients in East Kent with about 930 on advanced therapies. The closing date is 22 February 2026.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a keen Gastroenterologist to join the William Harvey Hospital team at Ashford. The appointee will help develop specialist services and may lead and develop the trust-wide IBD team in the future, including contributing to regional working groups. Short-term plans include development of transition clinics and joint medical/surgical clinics for patients with complex disease in line with GIRFT recommendations. The current trust-wide IBD team is led by two consultant Gastroenterologists and includes a nurse consultant and four IBD nurses, with a fortnightly trust-wide IBD MDT supported by a Historopathologist, Radiologist and Colorectal surgeons.
Outpatient templates and endoscopy lists for the appointee will be balanced towards IBD patients.
The post holder will be required to support the GI Bleeding rota and a currently 1:8 Gastroenterology ward week, including in-reach to the emergency pathways. The gastroenterology consultant teams (when covering wards) provide in-reach and referral services to ED/AMU and other wards. They are supported by junior doctors, physician associates and specialist nurses. The post holder should aim to provide two OPD clinics per week, two general endoscopy lists, plus a session dedicated to a specialist interest.

The post holder will contribute to the management of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology and to the development of specialist services.
The post holder will provide appropriate care, diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients presenting with gastroenterological illnesses in inpatient and outpatient settings and contribute to the site-based GI bleed rota. The gastroenterology consultant teams provide in-reach and referral services to ED/AMU and other wards; they are supported by junior doctors, physician associates and specialist nurses. In addition to inpatient services, the post holder should aim to provide two outpatient clinics per week and two general endoscopy lists, plus a session dedicated to a specialist interest.

Person Specification
Qualification & Training
* Full GMC Registration
* CCST Specialist Registration in Gastroenterology, or will be achieving within 6 months of interview
* Expertise in managing complex IBD
* To hold MRCP (UK)
* Post graduate gastroenterology qualifications - MD, PhD, ESEGH or equivalent
Skills & Experience
* Experienced in all aspects of gastroenterology
Clinical governance
* Evidence of experience in Clinical Governance and Audit
