Responsibilities
We are looking to appoint a Music Development Leader for Strings to manage and develop string teaching in schools and at Redbridge Music School (RMS). The role involves leading a team of 12 string teachers, developing and expanding string provision across schools, including our successful Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET) model, overseeing advanced string teaching at Redbridge Music School, and working collaboratively with fellow Music Development Leaders to sustain high quality, inclusive provision across the service.
Alongside the leadership responsibilities, the role includes a varied teaching commitment comprising of individual and small‑group lessons in schools, WCET teaching, ensemble leadership, and teaching advanced pupils at Redbridge Music School, including at least one evening per week. There may also be opportunities to perform as part of the Music Service string recital quartet, delivering weekly performances in schools to promote string instruments.
This is an exciting time to join RMS as we have high and increasing numbers of pupils learning stringed instruments and an expanding lower string department following a recent initiative to encourage pupils to learn the cello. We have a range of ensembles, with access to Mini Strings from their very first violin lesson to the Symphony Orchestra which performs a range of demanding repertoire. Our string pupils achieve high results, and a good proportion of pupils go on to study music in Higher Education.
This role could be full or part-time depending on the needs of the applicant, with a minimum requirement of 3 days. Music Development Leader roles sit within a permanent teaching contract and include an additional leadership responsibility that is reviewed annually. Where the leadership remit does not continue, the postholder would remain employed as a teacher in accordance with service needs.
Upper or lower string specialists should apply, but lower string specialists should be able to teach violin and viola confidently in primary schools. Working for Redbridge Music Service based at the John Savage Centre in Hainault and delivering tuition in 48 Redbridge schools, you will find yourself immersed in a world of musical energy, surrounded by instruments, creativity, and passion for teaching children but also adults, toddlers, and even babies.
With over 50 concerts per year, including performances at iconic venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, your role will directly impact the musical journeys of talented students in the community.
