Job summary
Applications are invited from Neurosurgical Specialist Registrars interested in further training in Complex Spinal Surgery, based at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, Department of Neurosurgery, London. The unit provides a multidisciplinary approach to complex spinal disorders. The appointee would work as a Clinical Fellow (ST7 or Post CCT equivalent) with the Complex Spine Unit. Applicants should have completed general professional training, hold GMC registration, and have completed neurosurgical or orthopaedic training and/or be in the process of completing training. Excellent interpersonal skills, high levels of consideration for patients and a commitment to clinical care are required. The post is available from February 2024 and will be available up to 12 months, subject to satisfactory progress.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder would have the opportunity to work within a cutting-edge, busy spinal unit with an interesting case-mix and a high-proportion of cases including complex spine reconstructive surgery, primary and metastatic spinal tumours, complex degenerative conditions, surgeries involving the cranio-cervical junction and minimally invasive spine surgery. Responsibilities include outpatient clinics, theatres, pre- and post-operative management of spinal patients. The appointee is expected to be involved in research projects during the attachment.

Person Specification
Eligibility
Essential
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
* Evidence of achievement of CT/ST6 competences in medicine at time of application (as defined by Core Medical training curricula) by commencement of the ST3 training post, supported by work-based assessments and Multi-Source Feedback or equivalent (ARCP or equivalent).
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in this specialty unless under exceptional circumstances.

* FRCS (Neuro.Surg) or equivalent at the time of application.

Clinical Experience

* Evidence of experience in Spinal Neurosurgery.

* Intention to Sub-Specialise in Spinal Neurosurgery.

* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement; proficient in a range of medical procedures; competences in managing medical emergencies and in-patients with portfolio evidence including log book documentation where applicable; ability to work without direct supervision where appropriate; current ALS certification or equivalent.
Desirable
* Awareness of basics of neurological disease and neurosurgical emergencies; some competencies in the specialty; skills in management of acute medical emergencies (e.g., ALERT, IMPACT).

* Understanding of research, audit basics, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety and quality improvement initiatives; knowledge of evidence-informed practice.
