Company Overview
BMT is an employee benefit trust, which means we're owned by our people, not shareholders. That's more than a business structure. It shapes how we work. We understand the importance of people - the people who use the systems we help deliver, and the people who make up our teams. It's people who carry the risk, adapt to the unknown, and make systems work in the real world. That makes BMT the perfect place to build a Human Factors career with real purpose.
We use our knowledge and expertise to drive transformative solutions around the world that will contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BMT’s focus SDGs are Climate Action and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These goals matter most to our stakeholders and are where we believe we can have the greatest impact towards a better future. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about addressing these global challenges and are proactive in finding opportunities to integrate sustainable practices as part of their role.
What You’ll Do
* Work alongside our clients, as well as engineers, program managers, operators, trainers and safety leads, to embed Human Factors in design, integration, and operations. You will focus on how people use systems in variable, complex, and pressured environments, and help shape solutions that support them to succeed.
* Lead and grow BMT’s Human Factors capability, mentoring others, building team strength, and embedding good practice across our defence, consulting, research, and engineering design programmes.
* Guide clients and internal teams to understand how people affect, and are affected by, the systems we deliver – especially when things don’t go to plan.
* Bring Human Factors to life in practical terms. This includes understanding the range of people we are designing for and the details of the goals they are working towards; improving workflows, Human Machine Interfaces, and the physical and cognitive environments in which they are working.
* Contribute to the evolution of our Human Factors offering, helping to shape the way we approach autonomy, complex system design, safety assurance, and human‑machine teaming across domains.
* You are a Chartered Human Factors / Ergonomics Specialist (or equivalent), with a strong track record in applying Human Factors methods to improve real‑world systems. Your value goes beyond method. It’s in how you think, how you collaborate, and how you influence colleagues to ensure we offer our customers the highest quality services centred around the human user.
Who We’re Looking For
* Grounded in people. You focus on those who have to make decisions, operate under pressure, recover from the unexpected, and adapt when plans don’t hold. You design for their success, not just to avoid failure.
* Confident in complexity. You understand how design, process, information, and responsibility interact. You can work across system boundaries and communicate clearly with engineers, project teams, safety leads, operators, and decision‑makers.
* Trusted to bring clarity. You ask the right questions, cut through noise, and help teams see what really matters. You’re calm when others aren’t, and bring structure where others see confusion.
* Influential without being loud. You don’t need to dominate the room. You build trust by helping people do their job better, whether they’re building a system, using it, or making the call that shapes its future.
* A builder of capability. You help others understand and apply Human Factors. You grow confidence in the discipline and leave systems and teams stronger than you found them.
* Adaptable and pragmatic. You know when to push for excellence and when to deliver what’s needed. You’re comfortable working across design reviews, field trials, research projects, and strategic planning.
You may have come from Human Factors, psychology, safety, engineering, design, or operations. Whether you’ve been leading formally or shaping outcomes from within a team, what matters is how you’ve made systems better for the people who rely on them. We expect you to share our passion for creating a more environmentally and socially sustainable future for all our stakeholders.
