BCP Council has a bold vision for creating sustainable, safe and healthy communities where people, nature, coast and towns come together harmoniously. We are the tenth-largest urban local authority in England and our communities are vibrant and diverse. Our corporate priorities are underpinned by our approach to put our people at the heart of our services.
We are seeking to appoint a Head of Programmes within the Public Health and Communities team as a central part of this mission. The creation of this post follows the recent decision to create separate public health functions for BCP Council and Dorset Council, disaggregating the pan-Dorset shared public health service. We’re searching for a dynamic Public Health team member that can help to deliver an aspirational public health function alongside our ambitions for empowering communities.
The Public Health function has a clear focus on the communities that are at the heart of the BCP area and how we can build capability and independence, tackle health inequalities, improve health outcomes for our children and young people, and create healthy environments through having a community centred approach to health and wellbeing.
This is a fantastic opportunity to influence across the council and to work collaboratively with communities and partners to make a real difference to residents. You’ll be pivotal in leading the commissioning, contract management and improvement of the public health and community services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, enhancing residents' health and well-being, mitigating health inequalities, and safeguarding local communities.
This post will work alongside one other Head of Programmes and be part of a team with support from Consultants in Public Health, Senior Health Programme Advisors and Health Programme Advisors, analysts and business support. Matrix working across the team provides opportunities for this role to work across a range of public health portfolios (for example, Children and young people, health improvement, health protection, healthy places and healthcare public health) dependent on knowledge, skills and interests of the right candidate and fit within existing team members roles and responsibilities.
The BCP Public Health & Communities team works from the Civic Centre in Bournemouth. We support agile and hybrid working using online technology. We also support flexible working where possible. There will be a need to work in the BCP area to build relationships with the team and partners, and to attend face to face meetings at least once a week.
If this opportunity sparks your interest, and you think you might be the person we are looking for, we would be delighted to hear from you. Interviews will be held in person and are likely to be held on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th September 2025.
