There’s a growing construction business out there that genuinely needs a Design Manager who can pull everything together without any drama. They’re flat-out with residential projects of all shapes and sizes, and they want someone who actually enjoys taking ownership, solving problems and keeping teams pointed in the right direction. You’d be the person who makes sure their windows, doors and curtain walling packages are fully thought through, coordinated and ready to build. If you like catching issues early, joining the dots between different people and generally being the one who stops things going sideways, you’ll fit right in. Here’s what the role actually looks like day-to-day: Taking the lead on the full design process, from project award right through to final technical submissions Reviewing each new project to understand what’s missing, what’s unclear and where the risks are Guiding the internal drawings team so details are developed properly and nothing slips Working closely with their technical team to make sure every opening, component and product is correctly scheduled Pulling structural and thermal inputs together from third-party engineers and making sure everything aligns Chairing design meetings, technical workshops and client discussions — basically keeping everyone on track Preparing reports, samples, schedules and submission packs that actually make sense to the person reading them Feeding into pre-construction decisions so estimating and clients get realistic, sensible design advice before things hit site Spotting opportunities to simplify or value-engineer details so the project stays on budget and doesn’t cause chaos later It’s a role for someone who’s comfortable being in the middle of things. You need to enjoy talking to people, explaining technical details in a way that doesn’t make their eyes glaze over, and stepping in early when something looks wrong. They’re looking for someone who: Can read and understand technical drawings without thinking twice Has experience in design, construction or project management and knows how the build process actually works Is confident using AutoCAD and happy digging into Excel when needed Communicates well with clients, engineers, site teams and anyone else who comes near the project Stays organised even when five things land at once Can handle deadlines If you’ve worked with glazing systems or know your way around UK building regs, that’s a bonus. If not, they’re far more interested in someone who’s practical, switched-on and willing to learn. What you’d get in return is a company that genuinely values people who take ownership. They want someone who will influence how their projects are delivered, make their internal teams stronger and help their clients actually trust the process. If you’re someone who likes making complicated things feel simple - and you enjoy being the steady hand when everything gets busy - this is a role where you’ll make a real difference.
