My client, a successful legal practice in Chelmsford, is seeking a proactive and commercially minded Financial Controller for a temporary fixed-term role covering maternity leave. This opportunity offers a dynamic and rewarding environment.
About the Role:
As the Financial Controller, you will be involved in all aspects of finance, from daily accounting to strategic planning. Your expertise will ensure compliance with CLC Accounts Rules, manage client funds, produce financial reports, and support the board with financial insights. This pivotal role is key to the firm's growth and client service excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
* Oversee all financial activities: daily accounting, financial planning, and management reporting.
* Ensure compliance with CLC Accounts Rules, especially in handling and reconciling client accounts.
* Prepare monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with UK GAAP.
* Produce cash flow forecasts and manage working capital.
* Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies.
* Coordinate payroll data with Accountants.
* Manage VAT returns and corporation tax filings with HMRC.
* Collaborate with the conveyancing team for billing and fee allocation.
* Maintain and improve internal financial controls, policies, and systems.
* Provide financial insights for pricing strategies and decisions.
* Lead and develop a small finance team of three.
* Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting.
* Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements:
* Full or part qualified (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with at least 2 years' experience in a similar role.
* Experience in a legal or professional services environment is preferred.
* Knowledge of CLC requirements and handling client funds is advantageous.
* Familiarity with accounting systems like Xero and Hoowla.
* Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools.
* Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
* Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining financial matters to the board.
* Leadership experience managing a finance team.
* Proactive, professional, with a commercial mindset and client focus.
