Overview

Gwynedd Council offers an attractive employment package. The Council operates internally through the medium of Welsh, and offers all its services bilingually. The applicant will be required to reach the linguistic level noted as one of the essential skills in the Person Specification. Desirable qualifications and training

* Reasonable standard of general education.
* NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care – Childcare Route - or willing to work towards it.
* GCSE.

Experience

* Essential: Experience of supporting or caring for another individual; relevant experience of working with disabled children and children who are ill; experience of office work and administrative procedures.
* Desirable: None specified beyond above.

Skills and specialist knowledge

* Holder of a full driving license.
* General knowledge of child development and child safety issues.

Language requirements

* Listening and Speaking - Intermediate: Able to maintain a fluent conversation on a number of everyday subjects and discuss cases in the field of work; able to follow a discussion in Clear Welsh on familiar matters; able to contribute to the conversation and answer questions.
* Reading and Understanding - Intermediate: Understand everyday correspondence at work; understand longer reports in Clear Welsh and extract main points (help may be required with vocabulary).
* Writing - Intermediate: Able to write letters for a specific purpose, e-mails and short reports in Welsh and English, using familiar vocabulary and phrases; may need checking before being sent.


Job Description

Purpose of the post

* Ensure that the people of Gwynedd are at the heart of everything we do.
* Assist individuals with learning disabilities to live their lives as they wish, help them develop skills and ensure opportunities to be part of their community.

Responsibilities and main duties

* Support the individuals who use the service: Work to meet the objectives of the individual you are supporting; respect the individual’s rights.
* Follow an Active Support ethos and Positive Behaviour Support, emphasising independence and working with individuals.
* Assist with personal care in a dignified and respectful manner; contribute to/follow Personal Care Plans.
* Communication and relationships: Cooperate and communicate with professional workers and families/carers.
* Guidance and policies: Act in accordance with the Social Services and Well-being Act 2014 and Gwynedd Council guidelines and policies; commit to a Professional Social Care Code of Practice.
* Training and supervision: Take part in supervision and mentoring; engage with Learning and Improvement programmes; pursue professional qualifications when needed.
* Safeguarding: Mentor new staff; assess and order equipment; administer, distribute and provide medication in line with policy; carry out health tasks and safeguarding protocols; report concerns as required.
* Health and safety and equality: Comply with Health and Safety rules; operate within equal opportunities and information management guidelines; protect personal information in line with Data Protection laws; contribute to reducing the Council’s carbon footprint.
* Other duties: Undertake any other reasonable duty commensurate with salary and responsibilities; report concerns of abuse; undertake duties at other sites if mandatory.


Special circumstances

The post-holder must be able to undertake manual handling tasks which can include wheelchairs and hoists. This job description is a general guide and may require duties not outlined above at the Team Manager’s or line manager’s request. Expected to work across other sites of the service if required.
