Purpose of the role
We’re excited to offer a part‑time Payroll Supervisor position within our dynamic and supportive HR function. This 15‑month maternity cover role is 22.5 hours per week (over 3 days) and offers remote working for applicants who are not based near our head office in Solihull, B37 7YB. The Payroll Supervisor will be responsible for the processing and checking of end‑to‑end weekly and monthly payrolls across the Colas Ltd Group, including its subsidiaries, for approximately 1200 people. This position will ensure the preparation and input of data into the Payroll System, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of data, validating input and calculations, managing queries from absence, average holiday pay to pension and benefits, liaising with the HR Team and wider business stakeholders as necessary to provide excellent customer service as required.
Main Responsibilities
As a Payroll Supervisor, you will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of weekly and monthly payrolls, making sure all colleagues are paid correctly and any queries are resolved quickly and professionally. This includes managing the calculation of Average Holiday Pay, administering Group Pension Schemes, and overseeing statutory payments such as PAYE, pensions and salary sacrifice benefits to ensure full legislative compliance. You will handle statutory reporting and liaise with HMRC, pension providers and other external bodies, managing reconciliations, payments and queries. The role also involves advising on complex absence cases and processing statutory and company‑related absences including SSP, SMP, SPP, SAP, ShPP, KIT days and jury service. In addition, you will administer company benefits such as Share Incentive Plans, ensure all employee deductions are processed accurately and work closely with HR teams across the business to provide clear payroll guidance. You will support key week‑end, month‑end and year‑end activities, including audits and the release of payslips, P45s, P11Ds and P60s, and will deputise for the Payroll Manager during periods of absence.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have solid experience in payroll and workforce management systems (PeopleXD experience is advantageous) and confidence managing payroll processes in a fast‑moving environment. Supervisory experience, strong communication skills and a high level of accuracy and professionalism are essential, along with the ability to build positive relationships across the HR team and the wider business. Experience with salary sacrifice schemes, benefits, payroll compliance and year‑end processes is essential. A CIPP qualification would be desirable but not essential. Most importantly, you’ll bring enthusiasm, reliability and a passion for delivering a great experience for our colleagues.
