Role Overview
Registered Nurse to work across our Neonatal service, which includes a 20‑bedded Level 2 local neonatal unit and a 6‑bedded transitional care unit within Northampton General Hospital, part of a large District General hospital and the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.
Responsibilities
* Assist in the overall nursing care, ensuring high standards of care to patients and their families.
* Act as a clinical role model, providing leadership and support to nursing and medical staff, promoting a safe working environment.
* Assess, develop, implement and evaluate high‑dependency and special clinical care for vulnerable neonates across the Neonatal unit and Transitional care using a philosophy of family‑centred care.
* Maintain high professional standards, keep abreast of research and developments within the neonatal field and support the neonatal team in the smooth running of the unit.
* Undertake the Neonatal Foundation Course within 12 months of employment and the Neonatal Qualified in Specialty (QIS) Course within 2 years.
* Act as a role model in customer service towards visitors to the hospital.
* Facilitate measures to help achieve directorate and Trust targets, disseminate all appropriate information to all members of the nursing team.
* Undertake induction and competency programmes relevant to the role.
* Take responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area.
* Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda.
* Undertake Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency programmes.
* Contribute to annual appraisal and be responsible for own personal performance/development plan to achieve key success factors for the role.
* Identify learning needs, negotiate a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.
* Undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.
* Be responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs.
* Promote and maintain effective communication both written and verbal.
* Actively undertake education, development and supervision of other staff members, assisting them in meeting work demands to provide quality patient experience.
* Work collaboratively and co‑operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
* Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
* Coordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with NGH Local Discharge Policy.
* Ensure the education of patients and their carers where a need has been identified.
* Assist the ward manager in the completion of a training needs analysis and ensure compliance of the team with Trust expectations in relation to mandatory training, role‑specific training and appraisals.
* Assist the ward manager in the development of team members through education and support.
* Assist the Ward Manager in monitoring the workload and skill mix and ensuring the ward operates effectively and safely.
* Ensure that self and all nursing staff practice at all times in accordance with the NMC code of professional practice, raising any concerns with the ward Manager.
* Maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as an assessor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff, supporting and facilitating their development.
* Contribute to the development of Trust and directorate policies, procedures, standards and guidelines and ensure compliance of self and others.
Qualifications & Development
* Registered Nurse with willingness and ability to undertake the Neonatal Foundation Course within 12 months of employment.
* Willingness to complete the Neonatal Qualified in Specialty (QIS) Course within 2 years of employment.
* Ability to safely supply, store, administer, check and dispose of medications, including controlled drugs.
