Large Rail Organisation Growing Team Strong Project Pipeline About the Role We are seeking a highly capable Senior Systems Engineer to join our expanding engineering team within a large and well-established rail organisation. With a strong and growing pipeline of projects across bids, products and major programmes, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering complex, high-impact rail solutions in a positive and collaborative environment. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of systems solutions from concept through to production and deployment. You will contribute to architectural decisions, lead technical work packages, and mentor junior engineers while ensuring delivery aligns with customer requirements, industry best practice and regulatory obligations. Key Responsibilities Lead the design and development of scalable, robust systems solutions that meet client and stakeholder requirements. Contribute to architectural strategy and key technical decisions, conducting trade-off studies and recommending appropriate technologies and tools. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to gather requirements, define scope and develop detailed technical specifications. Design and develop solutions in line with industry best practice and organisational engineering processes. Produce and review high-quality systems documentation, including requirements, architecture definitions, interface specifications and design artefacts. Provide independent peer review and checking of systems designs. Undertake the role of Designer under CDM regulations, ensuring risks are designed out or reduced to ALARP principles. Define and manage configuration control in accordance with company and project requirements. Support Work Package Managers by providing accurate progress reporting, forecasting, and identification of change, risk and opportunity. Where appointed, act as Work Package Manager and lead the systems engineering team operationally. Mentor and coach junior engineers, supporting their technical development and promoting engineering excellence. Troubleshoot complex technical issues, identify root causes and implement effective solutions. Apply project delivery processes and engineering methodologies as defined within the Management System and Engineering Management Plans. Contribute to technical elements of business cases to support project variations and future growth opportunities. Skills & Experience Extensive experience in systems development with a strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle methodologies. Proven track record of designing and delivering complex systems applications from concept through to production. Strong understanding of systems architecture, architecting techniques and design patterns. Proficient in the use of design tools to produce complex system designs. Experience working within complex, regulated engineering environments (ideally rail or similarly safety-critical industries). Strong understanding of engineering delivery methodologies and governance frameworks. Ability to define and manage configuration control processes. Experience with systems engineering tools such as: Requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS, Polarion) Modelling tools such as Melody Advance or Enterprise Architect (SysML, UML) Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong trade-off and decision-making capability. Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at multiple levels. Demonstrated experience leading work packages and mentoring junior engineers. Essential Criteria Degree qualified in Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience). Working towards or holding professional accreditation (e.g. CEng, IEng or equivalent). Why Join Us?
