The successful candidate will be expected to handle and process a range of human biological samples to prepare for appropriate sample analysis and support the BMS team in carrying out a range of technical duties to provide a comprehensive range of analyses/investigations in the provision of the Clinical Chemistry and Immunology service.
Ensure the confidentiality of patient records and data according to Data Protection Act 1998, GDPR and Caldicott Guidelines. Perform all laboratory duties diligently and with due care and consideration to the health, safety and welfare of oneself and others. Undergo on-the-job training to develop competence and confidence to perform technical duties independently.
Organise own work and ensure that results that have been produced are validated and quality controlled. Willingness to work 7 days including Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
* Receive and collate patient's samples when they first arrive in the laboratory and perform the preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis.
* Store and keep detailed archive of samples and perform any clerical duties required.
* Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory.
* Bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples or any specimens that do not collate to the request form.
* Notify senior BMS staff of stock usage and what needs to be ordered.
* Report any adverse incidents or non-conformities or breaches of health and safety to a BMS or senior BMS.
* Temperature monitoring of fridge, freezers, incubators and the environment.
* General housekeeping including removal of waste from the department, cleaning of safety cabinets, centrifuges and work surfaces, prepares disinfectants for use, regularly defrosts fridges and freezers.
* Provides wards and clinics with Cryoglobulin sample pick up and transport.
* Assists BMS staff with the retrieval of samples for processing and sending away samples to reference laboratories.
* Attend laboratory meetings and encourage participation in CPD.
* Participate in Quality activities, such as audit and investigation of non-conformities.
* Participate in H&S activities, such as risk and COSHH assessment.
Requirements:
* Numerate and Literate to GCSE level (to include English and Mathematics)
* Experience of working in a clinical laboratory or equivalent
* Demonstrably Computer literate, with demonstrable data entry experience
* Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues
* Knowledge and interest in biomedical science
* Understands the role of medical laboratories and quality systems
* Awareness of Health and Safety issues
* Ability to communicate courteously verbally and in writing
* Work as part of a team or on own initiative
* Work in an organised, time efficient and methodical manner
* Familiar with use of basic laboratory equipment e.g. pipette, pH meter, centrifuge etc.
* Scientifically numerate
* Attention to detail
* Willingness to learn and conform to departmental policies, procedures and take defined instruction from others
* Ability to adapt to requirements of departmental needs with respect to working time
