Locum Consultant in Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedics
This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon. The post will be available from December 2025 for a period of 6 months.
This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedic team (Mr Davies, Ms Deriu, Miss Fishlock, Mr Foster, Mr Holton & Mr Sabouni).

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will provide a key role in developing and delivering the paediatric orthopaedic service, improving outcomes for our patients. The appointed candidate will join a dedicated, consultant‑led, multidisciplinary team working closely with general Trauma and Orthopaedic and Major Trauma Centre surgeons to provide excellent patient care. Leeds has one of the largest major trauma centres with a high volume of paediatric orthopaedic trauma.
The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. There may be opportunity to provide an outreach service as part of the hub and spoke model in place across West Yorkshire.
Successful applicants should hold FRCS (Trauma & Orth) or equivalent qualification and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
Applicants should have established skills in General Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedics. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.
Job responsibilities
* To deliver care to patients with paediatric trauma & orthopaedic conditions at the Leeds General Infirmary.
* Provide acute care of paediatric patients.
* Elective operating with pre‑operative & post‑operative ward rounds.
* Supervision of patients.
* Contribute to specialist multi‑disciplinary team meetings.
* Contribute to the role of Leeds as a training centre for national trainees in Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedics.
* Provide support and clinical expertise to the teams based in referring centres.
* Link with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals and across the region.
* Work with colleagues in Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedics to deliver acute on‑call (currently 1 in 6). This includes both out‑of‑hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.
* Contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedic service; facilitate and contribute to current clinical research programmes on going in the department.
About us
In relation to this post, the post holder will provide support to the Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedics team. It will therefore ensure the service is able to continue in its pursuit to provide the best levels of care for patients accessing the service on both a trauma and elective basis. The Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic service continues to grow and develop. Leeds General Infirmary opened as a level 1 trauma centre on 2 April 2013. Due to its regional remit, it provides responsibility of care to a population of almost 3 million. The support encompasses all aspects of trauma care, including attendance at trauma meetings, coordination and prioritisation of patient care, and emergency admissions as well as emergency operating. The trauma on call Consultant also includes a daily combined ward round with a multi‑disciplinary team on the paediatric orthopaedic ward.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB BS (or equivalent)
* Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
Experience
* Completed a recognised training programme in trauma & orthopaedic surgery.
* At least 2 years higher training in a recognised Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedic Fellowship programme.
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of acute paediatric trauma surgical conditions.
* Specifically, demonstrate a level of skills and clinical experience in General Paediatric Trauma & Orthopaedics.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Fit to practise safely.
