Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Psychiatry Radnorshire
Apply for the Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Psychiatry Radnorshire role at NHS.
Job Summary
The successful post holder will join a forward‑thinking, motivated and experienced Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in Llandrindod Wells, Radnorshire, Powys. The acute service in this rural area is undergoing positive change, actively shaping services, and the role will be varied and interesting. The post holder will contribute to the mental health team's aspiration to be the best, and will enjoy flexibility to develop a speciality interest. Your work will be highly appreciated by both staff and the local community.
The post covers a rural catchment area of approximately 29,000 residents, including Knighton, Presteigne, Rhayader, Llandrindod Wells, and Builth Wells. Powys Teaching Health Board, Powys County Council, GPs, voluntary sector, and users/carers work closely together to plan and provide a range of mental health, learning disability, and substance misuse services in the area.
The post holder should preferably have both community (including memory assessment and crisis services) and acute inpatient experience, and possess excellent knowledge of assessment and treatment of organic and functional older‑adult mental states.
Main duties of the job
* Community Mental Health Teams: Powys OAMH services are organised into five geographic areas – Ystradgynlais, Breconshire, Radnorshire, Newtown, and Welshpool – each based in a local hospital or community facility. Teams are multidisciplinary and partner with the local authority to provide holistic, recovery‑focused care. Consultants are supported by specialty doctors for medical input.
* Inpatient Services: Two mixed‑gender units – Tawe in Ystradgynlais Community Hospital and Clywedog in Llandrindod Community Hospital – provide 10 and 8 beds respectively for patients with organic and/or functional mental health disorders. These units work closely with adult and older‑adult inpatient services, with placement based on need rather than age.
