We are recruiting for a 1:1 Autism Support Assistant to work full-time in a mainstream primary school in Cwmbran, starting September 2025. This rewarding role involves supporting a pupil with ASD throughout the school day to help them feel safe, included, and successful in their learning.
Role Overview
You will provide dedicated 1:1 support to a child with autism within a mainstream classroom. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Assisting the pupil with learning tasks, transitions, and classroom routines
Implementing individual support strategies, including visual aids and sensory tools
Promoting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and therapists
Creating a calm, structured, and inclusive environment

What We’re Looking For
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, especially those with lived or professional experience supporting individuals with autism. Training can be provided, but a caring and patient nature is essential.
Experience supporting someone with autism (personal, voluntary, or professional)
A calm, consistent, and empathetic approach
Good communication and teamwork skills
Willingness to follow routines and personalised behaviour strategies
Commitment to making a positive impact
School or SEN experience
Knowledge of ASD strategies (e.g., PECS, TEACCH, Makaton)
Behaviour management training (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA)
Relevant qualifications in education, SEN, psychology, or childcare
