We are currently recruiting for Consultants in Acute Medicine. The Acute Care Consultant plays a pivotal role in providing both clinical and team leadership within the department. The role involves working as part of a team comprising Higher Specialty trainees, Middle Grades, ACPs, Junior Doctors (GPVTS, FY2s, FY1s), and a skilled nursing team.
Applicants with specialist training in other specialties and an interest in Acute Medicine will also be considered. We are particularly interested in candidates with a specialist interest in ultrasound-guided procedures, ITU, or Respiratory Medicine, as we plan to develop an enhanced care unit in AMU. We support career development for those wishing to expand their specialty interests alongside Acute Medicine.

What we ask from you

* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), European Community Rights, or CESR
* Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Acute Care Medicine or within 6 months of confirmed entry
* Adult Life Support (ALS) within the last 3 years
The working week for a full-time Consultant comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with an additional 2.25 PAs each (each valued at 4 hours). Typically, a Consultant spends 7.5 PAs on Direct Clinical Care, including supervision and cover, 1.5 PAs on Supporting Professional Activities, and 1 PA for administration. The Acute Medical team works on a rotational basis covering Ward 29, AMU, and Ambulatory Care.
The GIM Consultants' post-take hours are from 5 pm to 9 pm on weekdays and 8 am to 1 pm, then 5 pm to 9 pm on weekends.
Non-clinical responsibilities may include:
* Formal and informal teaching
* Supporting the induction programme
* Clinical governance – audits, incidents, complaints
* Rota management, mortality review, mentorship
* Lead areas such as IT development, training, simulation, and clinical education
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. The Trust offers inpatient and outpatient services at Manor Hospital, which features state-of-the-art facilities including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and an Integrated Assessment Unit, following a £170 million development completed in 2010.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide definitive care for patient attendances and admissions
2. Lead delivery of high-quality, evidence-based acute medical care
3. Oversee comprehensive medical services in AMU and A&E, developing patient care plans and managing emergency admissions
4. Develop services to support admission avoidance and early discharges
5. Lead and reform emergency medical management, establishing links with GPs and other consultants
6. Monitor quality and safety of emergency care delivery
7. Ensure safe, high-quality acute medical interventions and procedures
8. Support teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, and postgraduate education
9. Promote audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives
